My boyfriend’s 2017 forester (~90k miles) has been at the dealership for almost a week now. Last Wednesday, he was driving on the highway and his car just shut off completely. It took all the way until today just for the dealership to be able to figure out what is wrong with it.
According to them, his EGR was stuck open, he needs new spark plugs, and he needs an induction cleaning. The EGR is still under warranty, so there’s no charge for that, but they’re trying to charge him $500 for the spark plugs and the induction cleaning, which sounds like it has the potential to be absolutely ridiculous if the induction cleaning is what i think it may be.
Now my question is, what exactly is an “induction cleaning” and what does the process entail? I have my guesses but i want to be 110% sure. Neither of us have ever heard of an induction cleaning. Is the dealership just trying to screw him over? Is an induction cleaning really necessary or is it just a sale the dealership is trying to collect on? I could do a google search, but I’d rather hear advice from other Subaru owners and their experiences.
Thank you!
