Hey guys. Today I finally put on my new wheels and tires. The wheels are Motegi MR274 17x7 5x100 40mm offset. The tires are Cooper Discoverer AT3 235/60/17R. I wanted to point out that this is about the biggest setup you can get away with on stock ride height. There is very little (~1/4") clearance while wheel is full turn. Also, as pictured below, you will see there is very very little room between the tire and the strut (~1") and also the wheel and the caliper (< 1"). I know there is a wheel/tire setup database somewhere that this should be filed under, and I trust the mods will help the info find it's way there (Thanks!).

Looks great man! How do you like the tires so far?
I want to start shopping for wheels soon myself and have never done so before, any advice on a good site to browse options? I want to go 18x8 with a good tire for the summer time.

Thanks man! I also was a total newb with wheels and tires. I found a ton of great wheels on wheelpros.com and also just searching google images or ebay with the size, lug pattern and offset I want. E.g. just search "18x8 5x100 40" in ebay and you should get a ton of options. But once you find the wheel you want be sure to search long and hard because there is some random car parts vendor out there that is having a sale on those wheels and you can save money.

As for tires, I am loving these tires so far. Best mod I have ever done. Stick to the road like I've never experienced before. Definitely the first place to start performance mods. Eagle GT's look awesome and I'm pretty sure they will be a great summer tire.

Hi DubbleThePleasure,

How's your tire setup treating you now that you've had time to run on them? Any reduction in MPG's, rubbing, steering wheel lock, etc? I'm planning on picking up a set of BFG Long Trail T/A 235/60/17 for my 2.5i this weekend. I'm pretty certain they will fit without a headache.

Did you keep the same psi?

Thanks for the help :)

That is tons of strut clearance!
My FXT has about 2mm of strut/tire clearance on the rear, compared to your 25mm+

Also, brake caliper clearance can be much tighter too. I've run and witnessed other setups with between 1-4mm of clearance with the brake calipers.

The setup looks awesome though! Very aggressive looking in that rock crawler sort of sense.

I found some inexpensive oe 17 in 2009 WRX wheels. If I'm correct the offset is 55mm do you guys think it will fit my incoming 2014 XT wich is 48mm offset...?
I'm going to install some 215/65/17 or 225/60/17 winter tires

Does the 2009 WRX use the same bolt pattern as the Forester, 5x100?
Or does it use the bolt pattern as the STI, 5x114.5?

Also, go with the narrower 215, or even 205 for winter tires.

Everything else being equal, a 55mm offset ("ET") will pull the tire closer to the suspension than the stock 48mm.

You can play with the numbers here.

Hey gerkshinobi, anymore info on your Coopers? Are you happy with the handling, road noise, and MPG?

I'm trying to decide between the Yoko Geolandar ATS vs. the Cooper Discover AT3s. The guy at Discount Tire felt that the Geolander would be a bit less noisy, but the Geolander don't come in 235/60/17s. I would have to go to a 235/65/17, which is probably pushing the limits with the wheel I'm going with.

Here's the wheels Konig Integram 17x8 +40

i had about 1500 miles on the duelers and they definitely felt lighter than the at3's but the grip was lacking definitely. i havent been able to take the at3's out onto the dirt yet, but have been itching to haha. i've noticed the at3's are really sensitive to differences in tire pressure in terms of driving straight though so i ended up getting a new digital tire gauge. so far, im pretty happy with the purchase, they definitely drive like a beefier tire haha

i kind of wish i had told them to put the white lettering on the outside like yours, but by the time i noticed the put it on the inside they had already mounted two of the wheels. time to take a sponge and some water to yours to get that extra color off!

I also took dubblethepleasure's advice! The only thing different I did was to mount the tires with the white lettering on the outside.

RigBert and Dubble, have you guys attempted to put a full size spare of the Coopers inside the car yet? Just curious as I'll likely be ordering a 5th matching wheel and another tire and have been considering a roof rack if I cannot fit it into the spare tire area. It won't stop me from ordering the 5th wheel if it does not fit, but just wanted to estimate how much money I'll be spending if I need a roof rack as well haha

I'm currently at like 36.8 psi cold and I had it at around 33.5 to 34 before. I am getting around 22ish city and 26-27 hwy estimated. I think I got better mpg around 33-34psi than I am getting at 36-37 psi, but it makes sense because the tire is taller at the higher psi so it would read as lower mpg based on the number of rotations the wheel turns, right? Maybe I'm over thinking it haha

Thanks for trying it. Looking forward to seeing if it'll fit. If you are looking for a portable compressor, I have a viair one and it has worked pretty well for me. I had to fill my old car every week because the wheel had a slow leak. Just make sure you use the ac adapter from the arm rest area. I blew a fuse from the one in the front underneath the climate control stuff. I haven't tried the one in the trunk yet

I bought an extra steel wheel from Subaru but I haven't pulled the trigger on the 5th cooper tire (235/60/17) for my spare. I know it doesn't fit in the tire well fully inflated and I doubt it would fit if it's deflated either. I'm considering picking up a used tire with the same specs as the OEM tires (225/60/17) just so it can fit snuggly in the spare tire well.

Or I'll just leave the spare donut as it is and not worry about this anymore.

I got 225/70R16 BFG all terrains on mine. I can barely fit a finger between the tyre and the front strut but theres no rubbing at all at full lock. These are 28.4 in OAD but yeah, they fit great. Definitely wouldnt go bigger though without major rubbing on the strut.
