I have a 2013 Forester 2X with a manual transmission. It has about 163,000 miles on it, and the last clutch replacement was at 75,000 miles. I live on Long Island in New York and do mostly local driving, so there’s lots of stop and go between the stop signs, traffic lights, and congestion.
Recently the gears started slipping - a lot, and a couple of times I could smell something burning for a few seconds. It’s not slipping as much now, but I figured the problem was something with the clutch.
I took it to my regular (independent) mechanic: he’s been maintaining and fixing my cars for over thirty years. His shop is not cheap, but they’ve always done good work and it’s a very busy shop.
He said that the clutch kit has to be replaced, including the flywheel, and that it’s at risk of sudden failure the more I drive it.
He estimates that the job will run about $1,900 - $2,000 and he’d need the car for two days. I know that it would cost a lot more if I took it to the dealership for repair. I’m just wondering about the estimated price of $1,900 - $2,000. Does that sound reasonable?
