No CVT. It's basically the same 4EAT that the two previous generation Foresters had. Uses the same fluid.

Engine is the FB25 with a timing chain. 2011 was the first year for that engine in the Forester. They are notorious for oil consumption so keep a constant watch on the oil level. Unlike the EJ engines, the FA/FBs require full synthetic oil. 0W-20 is recommended but 5W-30 will work fine.

 

Thanks for the good news about she/her/ze having the 4EAT and not the other thing. I drained and refilled 2x with Idemitsu ATF HP. There was no color when we bought it and it came out very dark which is puzzling because CARFAX showed extensive maintenance since 1st purchase when new. It came with the owner manual and most of the pamphlets and other junk in the official SUBARU pouch. I just went down and looked at the stick and it looks pretty..in pink (pardon the shtick..I'm a dip). Washed and waxed..vacuumed. It really looks new. Under the hood as clean as can be. Under the car also very clean and no rough stuff from offroading it. It was probably garage kept all of the time since new. I may do one more drain and fill and plan to add a PROLONG transmission treatment in any case. PROLONG has given us amazing results over the years and I highly recommend it. It won't help the CVT tranny's, though, and should not be used in those. If you are in doubt about compatibility using PROLONG oil and trans products with your car, you can call Sherry at their office and she has all the information you could need and is very knowledgable in automotive matters. I added the oil treatment earlier and I just started it and it is the quietest 2.3 I've listened to. Oh, maybe you can answer another question: Is there no external trans fl. filter on these 2011's? There's only a blank shallow cavity in the spot where one goes on our 2005. Thanks for the help with getting to know a 2011 (no timing belts; and spark plugs look like a nice outing..plastic intake? o well).

I use the Idemitsu ATF on mine too. Its a bit cheaper than Subaru ATF and its the same fluid. I do a drain and fill every 30k miles.
