2006 - Automatic gear stuck in park? - SOLVED!

I have a 06 forester and lately I have been experiencing problems with the
automatic shifter. When I press the brake, normally, I am able to change the gear from park to drive. But lately, it has been sticking as if I was not pressing down on the brake pedal. has anyone experienced this.
is there an easy diy fix? I think I have about 50K miles on it so warranty fix is out.

everytime I need to shift, I have to depress the button next to the gear shift.

your help is greatly appreciated.

when you mean button, do you mean that white slot next to the shifter?
I jam a key in there then shift the gear to get it out of park.

do you guys have pix where I should check?

@scubadoober that's for the info. actually, my wife took the car to the mechanic today before i saw your email....it would have been exciting to find out the prob using your instructions...thank you anyway.

it cost $82 to get it fixed.

one thing i noticed was that the back brake lights were not working....
