Vehicle Details:
2005 Subaru Forester 2.5X
My 2005 Forester ~145,000 miles, has a lurch at low speeds (under 20 mph) and gears (1st-3rd). Automatic transmission. As I put it in drive or reverse and press the gas there is a lag (rpms increase by ~1,000 up to ~3,500 then drop) then it lurches into motion. If it is in drive sometimes it rolls backwards. There is no clunking, grinding, whining etc. I have heard some Subies have a built in rev lag? Is that only for manual transmissions?

I have replaced O2 sensor, air filter, spark plugs, catalytic converters, and it just passed CA smog.

Anyone else have this and get a solution? Does the transmission need to be rebuilt?

@2.5x_sleeper Planning to check it today. It's been non-op for a couple years (bad cat) and I'm trying to get it back running now that the cat was replaced. When I noticed the lurch start about 2023 I checked the ATF and it was red and clean, no burn smell and full. As I started to drive it to get smog checked I noticed the lurch was getting worse. Will update once I take a peek. Hope it's that simple.

@Rain2005Fos welcome to the forum!

How's the ATF look & is it at the correct level? Has The ATF been changed recently? If yes, was the ATF filter replaced?

ATF shows full on cold, light reddish orange transparent fluid no major burnt smell. Last ATF filter/fluid change was 4 years and 20,000 miles ago. Shop that did fluid check 2yr 1,000 miles ago didn't note any ATF problem.

"It's been non-op for a couple years ..."
The transmission valves may be hanging up after sitting without moving.

Do you have manual shifting ability in your car or just "D"?
I can shift through those gears manually no problem. No lag. Also when the car is cold it doesn't happen. It seems to be when the car warms up and happens when I slow down then speed up again like when making a sharp turn. Maybe losing pressure in the transmission?

Ok, left side of transmission, side ways mounted filter. Looks like oil filter. It should say transmission on it. You might be able to snap a picture. If you can, post it here.
The reply box doesn't give me an option to insert a photo but it looks like the one in the picture posted by @2.5x_sleeper

So twice now the lurch has been so hard going uphill from a stop that my rear tires screeched. I also noticed my car making a sucking/whirring/squirting sound when I accelerate. I can hear it through the cab vents. Going today to get the codes ready since the engine light is on and cruise control is blinking.
