Vehicle Details:
2005 Subaru Forester 2.5X
My 2005 Forester ~145,000 miles, has a lurch at low speeds (under 20 mph) and gears (1st-3rd). Automatic transmission. As I put it in drive or reverse and press the gas there is a lag (rpms increase by ~1,000 up to ~3,500 then drop) then it lurches into motion. If it is in drive sometimes it rolls backwards. There is no clunking, grinding, whining etc. I have heard some Subies have a built in rev lag? Is that only for manual transmissions?

I have replaced O2 sensor, air filter, spark plugs, catalytic converters, and it just passed CA smog.

Anyone else have this and get a solution? Does the transmission need to be rebuilt?

@2.5x_sleeper Planning to check it today. It's been non-op for a couple years (bad cat) and I'm trying to get it back running now that the cat was replaced. When I noticed the lurch start about 2023 I checked the ATF and it was red and clean, no burn smell and full. As I started to drive it to get smog checked I noticed the lurch was getting worse. Will update once I take a peek. Hope it's that simple.

@Rain2005Fos the external spin on ATF filter is special, considered a non-maintenance... permanent filter, only changed when the transmission is worked on. If an engine oil filter was installed, in time, there will be issues!

The Subaru ATF filter looks like this:

Bobby...

That's not what I call a "lurch". That's something more significant. I'm pretty sure it is sticking valves. If you were in gear #1 on this uphill start, would would it still act like that?

When I first got my car, I pulled the pan and cleaned all the gunk out.

The car had a really noisy system, squealing and stuff like that. I was really worried so I went ahead and swapped the transmission out. The one I swapped in made all the same noises and it was a 2009 model. This November will be one year of driving on this transmission with no problems except the noise. I cleaned up the 2010 valve body and intend to put it into this 2009 transmission and see what the results are.

This is a brief advertising video that gives some idea of the things that are going on in the hydraulic system. There other additives that could help but you have to be careful not to get carried away with transmission additives.

The external "filter" is NOT a filter. It is a large particle screen. There's a internal filter in the pan. It's not a maintenance item. Use of a aftermarket "filter" leads to many issues with the transmission because it changes the pressure inside the transmission. Automatic transmission DO NOT generate particles that warrant changing this large particle screen.

If this screen is actually clogged, you have way bigger problems. But in general nothing is being burned and there's just nothing being produced that would clog either the internal filter or external screen.

We've seen multiple posts on here where owners think they're being proactive and change this with aftermarket units and cause issues.
