So I noticed there is an apk in the google play store called JDMscan (FreeSSM for android), so I downloaded it to my android phone. But the only connection option is USB. So my question is what cable or cable(s) do i need to make this apk work with my Subaru's ECU??

Here is the cable that is recommended and confirmed working with FREEssm... it works with windows and probably works with linux
FTDI FT232RL VAG USB diagnostic cable for use with VCDS lite and 409.1

if you want to run JDMscan (FREEssm ported for android) you will need the FTDI FT232RL VAG I mentioned above and the otg cable. As long as your android device supports otg
Micro USB Host OTG Cable

@stallard ^ what he said! :) So long as the diesel supports and has an OBDII connector it should work but as I do not have a diesel Subaru I cannot confirm. OBDII does work on my 2010 Mitsubishi L200 / Triton diesel.

Kevin, I'm pretty sure it works with the diesel model.

Impree20za says here in this thread he was able to do a reset on a diesel...
