2002 - Cup Holder Situation?

Hi, I've been scouring this page trying to find mods for the pull-out flimsy cup holder in the 2002's but can't seem to find much.

I know about these 3D printed ones that fit in the tray/coin slots, but I'm wondering if there's even a better way now.

Does anyone know if there's something I could swap in for the center arm rest console bit? Or if some other part might work for sturdy cup holders?

Hahaha! Yeah, the cup holder situation in the early ones is bad. For the most part I just keep some sort of sports bottle with a cap on it in the car now so I can just toss it on the passenger seat after a swig. The two cup holders above the radio are useless and the one in the center console sits too far back to be useful.

I have a 2001, I have tried the 3D Printed unit and it does not work well, it does not hold/grip the cup well, so as you swerve/corner the cup just flops over. I even tried lining the cup holder with something "softer/less smooth", and the cup still flops. In the end I replaced my original center arm rest console with the cup holder that sits in the console and that seems to work well. but as @steve_k points out its not in the best usable position. We did use the 2 above the radio, but condensation, and fluid leaks make that area very sticky and messy.

Ah gotcha. I've been eyeing the 3D printed ones but was wondering if they'd have that problem.

And to you & @steve_k both, exactly! The ones above the radio work fine if you're okay with the buttons being covered in spills and condensation. A friend of mine used to have a Saab that had the same pull-out cupholder so I have to imagine the issue goes beyond SF owners, so I'm so surprised there aren't more readily available DIYs for it.

I won't be able to take a picture of the armrest/emergency brake part in my actual car until later today but here's an image I found online that is pretty close: (the only difference is I don't have seat warmers, I have a little tray where those are)

I didn't have this era of vehicle but an older Legacy that had similar cup holder issues. They were flimsy and small. I got a metal fabricator to make me some out of ¼" steel. It got attached to a piece of plywood that fit into the existing slot left behind by the removed stock cupholder. It worked great and provided me with a much more flexible solution. I think it only cost me $50 including painting. And because it was magnetic, I could turn it into a stand for my phone. Might be an idea that could work better than a 3d printed version.
