'15 Forester 2.0XT jerky acceleration

Hi all, recently my 2.0XT has started jerking the car forward/back, and also slow to accelerate at times. This seems to happen around 1800-2500 RPM. I took it in to my local dealer and they did a "transmission relearn" and it went away for a month. Now it's happening again.

1. Is this "transmission relearn" the idle relearn thing I'm seeing so many threads about? Is this what I need to do?
2. If not, any ideas?

Thanks all.

there have been a few threads on this and no one has been able to figure it out. One guy traded his car in, the others presumably did as well as they've disappeared from the forums.

Mine use to do that, especially in sport mode. Seemed to correspond to knock and or a/f % learn adjustment on my Accessport. It was jerky in those same RPM areas on the OEM tune and COBB stage 1. Since recently doing the recent recall reflash to the newest OEM tune and then flashing to the new version of COBB stage 1, that has the new base tune logic, it seems the jerky acceleration has been fixed for the most part. Still not perfect, but been running much better for me and I have 88k miles.

Do you know if your car is part of the recall and if so have you got it done? Either way it might be worth asking your dealer to check if your car has the latest tune/PAK file.

I have had the same issue intermittently and whenever I call the dealer to setup an appointment it seems to always go away so I just cancel.
I have no idea if this is related but I checked my tire pressure the other day. One was several PSI lower than the others so I added air. After that my car has been driving really great. I'm waiting for the problem to come back to see if that resolved my issue or not. I'm hoping it's that simple but I doubt it.

I just took it in to the dealer about a month ago as I said and the printout said the car was up-to-date in terms of firmware etc.

Mine seems to correlate with having the A/C on...from a technical standpoint it seems like they should've made two separate sets of tuning maps/parameters, one for A/C on, and one for A/C off. I think I'm going to get the A/C system checked out...

yep, mine would stall for a few seconds when I pressed the gas around the 2k rpm range. Worse when I had the A/C on as well. At other times it would feel like I was getting on/off the gas repetitively which gave it the jerking motion.

2015 2.0XT Engine surging software update!!!

Posted here in the past about the engine surging issue (as many others have; I saw that class action suit thread)...got sick of it happening again and took it back to the dealer.

I've been noticing that 90% of the time it happens when it's 100F out and I have the A/C on, told them to look at the tranny and the A/C. Just picked it up and they said there was a software update for the surging issue!!!! Dealer readout says: "Found software update to eliminate surging."

Will post back here if it doesn't fix the issue. It drove fine on the way back to work, but I'm reserving my relief for about 2 months from now. Last time I took it in they reset the transmission and the issue came back in a month.

Good luck to others if you haven't had the software update yet.

Nice! I had that surging on my 14XT and the software update for the "pre-ignition" pretty much eliminated it.

In hot temps with the AC on (putting more load on your engine) your car might still feel like it's surging just because it is heat soaked and pulling timing because of small knock events. I wouldn't be alarmed in those cases because it is just the software protecting itself by design.

If it's still surging under more average temps without the AC on I'd check to see if you're engine oil is overfilled or maybe you need new spark plugs.

This topic is likely a precurrsor to HT CVT failure

This is likely the HT CVT failure. It is either the entire system or the pressure valve that engages/locks the CVT. Luckily it should be covered by the new warranty extension. It would've been covered by my lifetime powertrain as well.

Let me back up though.

I have a '14 Forest XT Premium with 104,xxx miles on it

1st Issue that showed up was an overboost type without any power being delivered. It would happen from time to time, but the most common instance was when merging onto the highway and punching it. Boost would spike (using the digital built in as reference), RPMS would fly up, but the car would barely accelerate. This happened several times and I was due for an oil change so I brought it in. Paid the $150 diagnostic fee for them to run their "transmission test." I didn't care because it had to be something. Initial report was that they couldn't find anything and I ate the $150 or whatever it was. Oil was changed and despite having nothing to do with the transmission the slip/boost surge/whatever you want to call it was better.

2nd issue that presented itself was about a week after the above service. This is when the lurch/jerk showed up. It showed up exactly as described, under slight acceleration. Speed would hit about 25 to 30 and then the RPM would drop, the car would lurch, and carry on as normal. Super annoying in traffic and plain uncomfortable after a few times. I have the liftetime powertrain warranty so I thought "meh" next time I am by the dealership I'll get one of the techs to take a quick ride and prove somethings wrong. I didn't get that chance. I merged into traffic (pedal down because why not :) ) and when I settled into cruising speed the dash lit up. Everything was turned off, CEL, and At Oil flashing. Great, At Oil means something bad with the transmission.

So I brought the car in, they looked at the codes, dead lined the car, and pushed it back into the service bay. After 3 hrs of initial inspection it was narrowed down to either a pressure valve failing inside the CVT that was preventing it from fully locking or the whole thing being toast. I had to commit to a possible $300 fee to drop the transmission and pan. If it was just the valve the fluid would be fine and be a ~$1200 fix (w/o warranty). If there were metal shaving present it would be a new HT CVT and ~$7000 (w/o warranty). Well, I just heard back and there is an extreme presence of metal shavings and the thing is absolutely toasted. Luckily the new warranty release was sent out before they cracked into anything and everything will be covered. However, I'll be out of my car for another 2 weeks because there are not many HT CVTs hanging out on the shelf.

So I'd say be careful and get these things checked out if you have a high mileage XT like mine. The car drove safely when it failed, but I only put an extra 10 miles on it once all the warnings came up. My dealership has always been great and continues to be so. I do drive rather spiritedly and utilize S# a good amount. However, my understanding when I bought this thing was that the HT CVT was more than capable of handling the abuse for a very long time.

I am getting pretty pissed off with Subaru. The reason I got into an XT was because my previous forester suffered from the excessive oil consumption. My engine was rebuilt twice and landed in the time frame before it was a known issue. They offered to buy it back at a KBB excellent value and give me some money towards a new subaru model. That car spent months on end in the shop before I was able to move on and up to the XT. Now this XT transmission is toasted. Luckily the whole thing will be replaced and not just one component.

Best of luck!

So now that I've had the software update for a while, the jerky situation has been fixed, but now my A/C just shuts off ALL the time.

Pretty apparent that there's a heat issue with the A/C unit, and the software fix is to simply turn off the A/C when it gets too hot. Brilliant. So instead of replacing the faulty part, Subaru cheaped out with a crap software fix. And it's 109 out. Thanks Subaru.

Subaru is crap. Lesson learned, won't buy another Subaru again.
