'14 XT trans clunk

Hey dose anyone else with a new XT experience any clunking noises or just plain unrefined hard shifting into gear? Its most noticeable during high idle but also randomly occurs when shifting from Drive to Reverse. It feels/sounds like it's engaging reverse as we pass through the gate into drive then quickly changing over to drive. Either way when we go in for the Tags the service department is going to be questioned.

I'll post an update once I get word. Anyways I don't believe its typical unless this particular model is just that much different. I've driven both '13 Outback and Legacy with CVT and aside from a delay in changing gears they were pretty smooth. I'm willing to bet a firmware update will solve the issue but I'm willing to bet that will take a while if ever.

Every XT I test drove "clunked" when shifting into reverse - It was a bit startling the first time. I didn't notice it in the 2.5i model or any of Subaru's any other current offerings (Impreza, Crosstrek, Outback). The only trait I've noticed they share is a short delay when shifting from park to drive, park to reverse, reverse to drive, etc.

DD,
I do not recall the XT we test drove clunking at all. This is our first exposure to CVT's so I was very skeptical and critical of how it drove. The one we bought is not making any noise according to my wife. Tomorrow we are switching cars and I will have the XT. I will let you know if I hear anything.

I've also been curious about this. I've noticed my shifting between reverse and drive is smooth once the car is at optimal temperature. However, the colder the engine the harder and louder the clunking even with some startling jolting. At times it feels like it physically does not want to go into reverse. So I just let'r warm up a bit and move the shifter nice and slow. It seems to help.

Was able to visit the dealer today and they gave me a sigh of relief along with a new found quirk about the car. The service rep told me it's much like the Imprezza CVT's with some of the shifting issues i've experianced. If you have a lurch/delayed shift into reverse or drive, make sure you are COMPLETELY stopped before shifting. Also be sure to hold the brake peddle untill you feel it shift into gear. Smooths things out quite a bit. I was just used to other autos where you could get away with not quite stopping completely or holding the brake a little longer.
Also the "Clunk" I was experiencing going from "D" to "Park"....they said was "Normal". Apparently they grabbed one of the other new '14's on the lot and compared them side by side and they both behaved the same.

CVT clunk

I get the CVT clunk when on an incline shifting from park to reverse. Does not happen when on flat ground.
Like crunching gears in old manual car when not enough clutch.
Will this hurt the CVT over time?

Sometime switch engine off then select neutral and start engine helps. But even with engine off going from park to neutral is hard.

on a flat surface, i get a moderate clunk when shifting from park to R or D. i also get the small delay from R to D or D to R. on an incline, my wife puts the car in park and then actuates the parking brake which makes the car sit halfway on the tranny. she never listens to me. shifting from that position to R or D, there is a loud clunk. It doesn't sound good, but it doesn't sound "bad" either. i normally put the car in neutral then activate the parking brake. after its sitting on the brake, i shift into park and shut down.

I also experience this loud CLUNK sound in my 2017 FXT. I wanted to respond to the below two 'solutions'

drove 15yrs automatic cars, it's always shift into PARK, then ebrake. not this silly NEUTRAL, ebrake, PARK. What the heck is this?

my car still get this CLUNK noise when i am coming out from the garage, so i m sure my car is COMPLETELY STOPPED. also, been driving an automatic for 15 yrs, so i m familiar with holding the brake pedal until it shifts into gear...its not like i let out of the brake pedal as i m shifting...

No matter what type of Tranny, I always come to a complete stop before shifting. No need to cause any more wear than necessary while shifting. It may be a negligible difference, but a good practice none the less.
