SG5 vs. SG6 vs. SG9 - what gives?! (merged thread)

Alrighty folks, I've been doing some digging around and comparing various aspects of the above mentioned Forester chassis and trying to figure out just exactly what the actual differences are between them.

There seems to be a decent amount of confusion and definitely nothing that's quite that concise as to what they heck each one of the is. A lot of people seem to think that the SG5 is what runs from 03-05 in the USDM market while the SG9 is what runs from 06-08 in the USDM market meanwhile there is no mention of the SG6 at all really anywhere.....however, I'm fairly certain that if anyone with a USDM market Forester from 03-08 checks their individual VIN's they won't find the SG5 or SG9.....just the SG6 as a part of their VIN.

The following I'm going to post I know applies to the USDM market and the SG chassis as well but anything else beyond that I don't know for sure. If anyone has any further information to help expand upon this though I'd love to see and share it, the lack of anything clear or concise has gone on for far too long.

SG5 chassis code
--> Any Forester in the Japanese Domestic Market from what we consider here in the United States Domestic Market to be '03-'08 but for the JDM is '02-'07. Literally any and all trim levels to include all N/A and Turbo variants as long as it isn't the Forester STi (SG9).

SG6 chassis code
--> Literally any USDM Forester, N/A or Turbo from '03-'08, simple as that.

SG9 chassis code
--> This chassis code is reserved for the Forester STi and ONLY the Forester STi. It was produced from '04-'08 by USDM market standards/years but for the JDM market it was is '03-'07.

I'm also going to shamelessly plug 2 different part number resource websites while I'm at it since they've both been a massively helpful resource for me in trying to determine part numbers for various things and information in general.
http://opposedforces.com/parts/ --> For all your USDM chassis part number needs.
subaru | vehicle list?JP-CarParts.com --> For all your JDM chassis part number needs.

After going through all these posts I still didn't see anyone bring up an 08 XT sports' manual...the VIN Specifies
JF1-SG6664-8G......
Throughout all of the manuals everyone posted I never saw one that matched up with my seventh digit (6) which indicates the 2.0 or 2.5 turbo.

Sidenote...would anyone be able to give some guidance on the STi swap?

Hi there - your '08 XT Sports Manual possibly follows a slightly different or extended version of the VIN system. Either way - here's the info you need :).

I found all of this on VIN: how to read a Subaru Vehicle Identification Number - you can see that the 7th digit in your VIN ('6') corresponds to the MODEL TYPE you stated, the 'FORESTER SPORTS' (see the 6th row in the table at the bottom).

Couple of years late but hope it answers your question, in case it hasn't been already!

This topic last a long time.
Here some info from the European market (see the attachement). For the Forester SG (with or without facelift) we have only the SG5 and SG9, where the 5 refers to the 2.0 and the 9 to the 2.5 engines.
The pre-facelift version was only sold as 2.0 n/a, 2.0 turbo and 2.5 turbo.
The 2.5 n/a was only available in the SG with facelift (2005-2008).
I have never seen a SG6 as legal European version.

Also look at the explanation of the Model Number Plate for more info about the car.
