I'm sorry, I could not get from this thread, how I may, even for a fee, access service manual information.

I see that Subaru does not participate in Helm, and when I was at Stohlman of Sterling, Virginia, they claimed there was no consumer access to the online service data used by their mechanics.

I thought it was a requirement in order to sell cars in the US, that service information be made available to the end user.

Thank you.

@betztek You're HIRED ! That is it.

[EDIT: Stumbled upon "Troubleshooting Guide" - which pops open a new window, and appears to contain what looks like a shop manual, and non-obvious how one would save the information for future reference less laborious than screen captures.]

Now my continued "slower boy from Alabama" disability is preventing me from deciphering the offerings at that site, to end up with a collection of PDFs, that somewhat resembles a service manual for a 2021 Forester.

Anyone care to offer for what I should be searching ? I know I'm in trouble when they have a note limiting the subscription to 50 PDF downloads per hour.

Thank you.

I signed up for the 3 day access today and had all the scripts ready to download for the service manual.
Was pleasantly surprised to see that the service manual for the 2014 Forester in now a giant PDF.

Unless I was just seeing things. :)

You can always search to see if the PDF versions are out there before you sign up... the ones that say “Service Diagnostics” and have no document code are the online HTML ones... the ones that say “Service Manual” and have a document code are the single PDF with the index and links within the document.

Definitely not seeing things. STIS has them as full PDFs (and by section) up to 2015. Anything newer is by section only.

Great news. How long does it take to download the one large pdf file for the 2015 and is it the most up to date version?

These FSM’s are continually updated with new information.

I downloaded the '15 as a reference for my '17. The file is a little under 285 MB. Took about a half hour to download on a typical hotel (crappy) wifi connection. Can't imagine they update that one as often as the individual sections. The updates are available as individual pdfs. Some of the updates are incorporated into TSBs.

Another good reference is the "New Car Information" document for each model year. It provides detailed descriptions (though not service procedures) for all the changes over the previous MY. The changes for '17 were quite extensive. (11 MB/118 pages) I ended up downloading all of those for the SJ years.

One of the few good things about the STIS interface is that you can search by VIN.

I have a 2021 Forester Sport and I'd like to download the service manual as well. Reading through this thread, it looks like the method to accomplish this has changed since 2014 and the original script may not work anymore. @Panther37 , I believe you got some help from @betztek and were the last person on this thread to successfully download your manual.

In the end, did you use any script to automate the downloading of these files? Or was your method of:
  1. Click on one of the topics on the top frame.
  2. Click on the topic you want on the left frame. Then keep clicking on sub-topics until the main frame shows that information. This example is General Description, SPECIFICATIONS.
  3. On the top frame, click on the [Print] button and select Chapter.
  4. Wait for a print window to pop up.
  5. ...
  6. Profit!
  7. Repeat for each "Chapter".
purely a manual process? If it was manual, how many chapters were there to download?

@Theseus161 You're in luck. 2015 is the most recent year with a single .pdf.

I get the impression that SOA releases them as complete .pdfs on STIS after a certain number of years. I know back in 2012 when we bought our '05 the '05 shop manual was by section only, but the SF years were available as complete .pdf files. Now anything up to 2015 is either by section or one big .pdf

@Ratman528 ,
In 2019 it was purely a manual process of pulling up a section and printing to a PDF file. I don't recall the exact steps, and there is likely an easier/better way. I spent a few hours each day, for three days. Quite tedious.

All in all, I grabbed ten chapters totaling 60+ files. None of the hyperlinks work. Also have around 60 electrical schematics, same number of tech tips newsletters, and 15 or so technician reference/training booklets.

So that's around 200 files, in round numbers.

I never automated this because I didn't have that much time to work at it. My coding is a little bit better now and maybe I could figure something out with automator or even curl.

I researched what repair manual I might want to pick up for my 2010 Forester and decided to do the three day membership on techinfo.subaru.com

I figured based on all that I had read that there would be TONS of PDFs for me to DL and compile. Indeed, when I searched for my VIN, there were somewhere around 500 documents, but a majority of these are service manual corrections. There are three main manuals (service manual, body repair manual, and Mechanism and Function Manual). All of the documents listed as service manual corrections don't seem to list the actual corrections, so I am assuming that the corrections are already updated in the current version of manual available for download.

I guess my main question is making sure that I'm getting my money's worth with the three main manuals I downloaded. There's loads of content in them that I've already gleaned a lot of knowledge from, and nearly 5,000 pages... so I'm thrilled with the compilation, just wondering if someone at Subaru had the idea to update/compile the manual to make a batch download easier? Anyone with any experience on this? I searched the older forums on repair manuals but didn't see an answer; it's possible I didn't see my questions addressed elsewhere :)

My apologies, I think I just answered my own question. I checked the latest posted Service Manual Correction and it does seem that the current version of my Service Manual (v28 currently) has what would appear to be the corrections. Specifically I checked to see if the Service Manual had the added Cautions... indeed it does.

I guess this means that the entire service manual is already compiled into one giant PDF... certainly adds value to the money spent for the three day access... much less downloading required! And no need to figure out a script to try automating downloading! Win!
