Forester XT suspension upgrades

Hi All,

Newbie with a Subaru Forester XT 09 and have been lurking on this forum. There is a lot of great information for which I am thankful.

My tyres have gone and have just replaced this with RE001 which is so much better than the original tyres.

I have decided to go for the Whiteline rear sway bar. I have also been quoted for the front sway bar and anti lift kit.

Rear sway fitted $295
Front sway fitted $254
Anti lift kit fitted $349

I am not on a budget but want value for money.

I have been adviced that the best value is to get the front and rear sway bar and leave off the anti lift kit.

Would anyone recommend the rear sway and the anti lift kit and leave off the front? or all three to be fitted?

Thanks in advance.

Kelvin

Welcome!

The answer depends on how you want your car to handle. If you just want to cut body roll the 2 sway bars will do that, the anti lift kit wont.

If you want to reduce the understeer and achieve a more neutral chassis then get the rear sway bar and the anti lift kit, which is the way I went.

I heavier front sway bar will tend to induce more understeer.

The price for the anti lift kit is pretty high, does it include a 4 wheel alignment, which you will need.

Thanks so much for the reply. Yes, the aim is to reduce understeer. I will go for the 22mm adjustable rear swaybar and the anti lift kit.

I did think that the anti lift kit is a bit expensive. The price does not include the sports alignment which is an additional $150. I was also recommended to add HD endlinks which is another $175. This is all from MRT.

Can someone recommend another place for me to get quotes instead? It is all starting to get too expensive !

Thanks.

I have just had the Whiteline 22mm Adjustable RSB put on my XT (on the middle setting for now), and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone wanting better handling.

I'm now wondering how much more difference the 24mm FSB would make to keeping this boat flatter through the twisties.

Also how much do the 3 settings affect the RSB

The settings are in 1mm increase. So the whiteline 22mm RSB I have on my foz is set to high making it equivelant to 23mm. I tell ya what, I just switched from a diesel to the FXT and I am putting the RSB back on, on sunday. Man do I miss it!
It makes such a difference to the handling, freaking rolls around everywhere without it!

I'm very interested in the anti lift kit as well myself. Question for anyone with it though:
Did you notice it when you put it on? Like did anyone get it put on individually after their RSB and then get a chance to determine whether they felt it or not?

I've read too much goodness to not get it done, but... I'm curious to hear a real drivers review.

RSB you can totally put on yourself, as long as you have a jack (for ease) a breaker bar, a strong arm, socket set and allen key set. Its $250 for the part from MRT, and takes about 30-1hr if you havent done before. If you can get the RSB installed for $25 though i'd just do that :)

Keen on any recommendations for where to get the Anti lift kit done cheap. All the prices i've been quoted are around the $300 for install not including wheel alignment

Time for a reality check.

Buy the parts from Whiteline direct. I did the rear sway bar myself in about 30 mins with no dramas. You DO NOT need the end links which some people have reported as having failures after only months in service.

I fitted the Anti Lift Kit weeks later and it was worth about 1/2 as much improvement as the rear sway bar, which is to say, a big improvement, but not absolutely huge. Well worth the money spent. I bought the kit direct and had a local workshop install it. Cost me $120 for the installation. I then drove around to the local tyre shop and got a 4 wheel alignment for $60. They set the caster to the maximum the ALK would allow, and all other settings to the Subaru factory specs. Some people like to increase the camber on the front end but that can have undesirable effects on straight line stability and tyre wear.

really! is a "sports alignment"? Me thinks someone is pulling your chain.

22mm HD RSB set on stiffest setting and a Anti Lift Kit (ALK) for me plus HSD HR coilovers. If I was running stock suspension I would not even bother with the ALK.

My car rides like its on rails and there is bugger all understeer.
