2019 - Touring - HK front door speakers sound muffled?

Vehicle Details:
2019 Touring
I purchased my first Subaru Forester 2019 Touring back in January. After a few weeks I realized the back door speakers were not working ( after my daughter kept complaining she couldn't hear the music ). Vehicle was purchased without warranty.

I ended up buying a set of aftermarket Focal brand speakers from Crutchfield.com and installed myself. Back speakers now working!

I also noticed that my front two door speakers sound muffled ( prior to switching out any speakers myself ). I can hear sound coming out of them but it is more like a bass sound and can't really hear melody.

My wife's Mazda CX-5 door speakers both have clear audio coming from them. So I decided to buy another set of aftermarket Focal speakers. When I installed today I get the same output in the new speaker. Muffled sound, only bass and low tones.

I'm wondering if this is what the front passenger door speakers should sound like? Or if not, anyone have suggestions on what could be causing this and how to fix?

Car is not under warranty, and going through dealer is not in my price range for now.

I did check sound setting via radio display and have already tried resetting the radio.

Thx

Thats normal Im afraid, HK amp DSP routes only lowpass bass freq to front door speakers, so waste of money to install focals there. since the stock door speaker impedance is greater than 8ohms, you'll also prolly throw off the volume balance with 4ohm speakers being twice as loud... but do whatever sounds good to your ears!

Thanks, that's what I was thinking... overall sound is ok now that I have the back speakers working, I just didn't know if this was normal since it's a newer car...

Hmmm, I have no issues with clarity with my 2021 HK system.

My 2010 Impreza OTOH was horrible. I had to upgrade the factory "premium" door sail tweeters to be rid of the muddy sound, and actually be able to hear vocals.

What did you upgrade to? That's what I tried to do by purchasing new speakers from Crutchfield: Focal ACX 165, however when I installed one of them I had the same muddy sound :(

I'm open to suggestions though if you have any to install something else?

I bought some cheap $20 tweeters from Walmart, and they were a huge improvement.

Keep in mind, that that system didn't have an amp, other than what was built into the factory HU.

I upgraded that too, but still no stand alone amp.

Possibly your amplifier is not quite right, and it is not sending the correct frequency to the dash speakers.

The earlier HK amps didn't have the best track record.

Ok. Thanks. Yeah it can be the amp but that's not a cheap fix... I might have to live with it for now ..

You could plug the front speaker into the rear door connector and see if it is clearer sounding. The rear speakers don't get as much low frequency/bass, so as long as that part is good, it might confirm or eliminate either the speakers or the amp.
