Vehicle Details:
2018 Forester XT.
I plan on doing a Drain and fill on my CVT. I plan on draining a gallon and adding the same amount. I have ready checked that driving a half mile to my retirement village auto hobby shop heats up the CVT 2 degrees F.

Since the expansion rate for one gallon at 5 degrees is approximately 1/2 oz per gallon I will dump the same amount in as what I took.

Long and short..no difference between drain and fills for CVT trans that I have done for 35 years.

I personally would not change CVT fluid in that matter, especially since I have done the same method on an automatic with a dipstick and been “off” on the correct level.

But to each their own, hopefully it goes well and lasts well.

Don't see why that would not work as long as you measure with a measuring cylinder what you take out and put back the same amount. Problem here is that I cannot buy the HT CVT fluid by the liters or quarts but only by gallons. There is always an off chance that your car came with an incorrect amount of fluid to start.

One other note for those who may stumble across this. The XT uses a specific Subaru “high torque” fluid that is not available in qt size bottles. It is only sold in 5 gallon buckets.

This is not a bad theory. I have done my own transmission changes for nearly 50 years. I have always measured what came out. I have now done, I believe, seven Subaru CVT drain and fills. Every one of them has worked out to be within a few ounces of putting back in exactly what I take out. However, I recently had an automatic transmission start out 1 quart low on the factory fill. I didn’t know this because there is no longer a transmission dipstick. So, please, always use the recommended fill procedure, being certain your temperature is at the right level, and then “compare“ how much you used versus how much you took out, for a sanity check.
Always use the proper Subaru CVT fluid. No aftermarket fluid meets the specs. Another trick I have found to get an extra 3/4 to 1 quart more on the drain and fill it to let it drip for 12 hours plus. Leave it up on blocks, and lightly reinstall your drain plug. I leave it overnight. You’ll be surprised how much more you get out! And don’t forget the TCM relearn.
