Hi all,

I recently picked up the Hella Sharptones...

Originally I installed them with the Grimmspeed harness to the stock wiring. Worked fine but I was afraid I'd blow a fuse... so on the advice here I installed with the accompanied Hella relay and the extra wiring as outlined in this thread.

Everything works fine and the horns are definitely louder with the relay than the harness only. However, the use of the horn when locking the vehicle is significantly quieter with this sequence as well.

Might I have done something incorrectly or is this normal?
I'm not sure about the 2018, but I know on the 2014-2015 the alarm beep comes from a separate unit from the horns.

Is the wire black wire that plugs into the horn, the trigger wire ?
Yes, and the stock horn if frame grounded. The Hella's are not even though that had been in the past. You will need to add a ground which can be a short wire with a ring terminal on one side and female spade connector on the opposite. You connect the Ring table to the orriginal upper horn mount bolt.

Steobel Horn

Thanks... I'm installing a Stoebel horn that has + and - terminals, but that shouldn't matter. Thanks on the trigger wire. It had me confused because of it's black color. As soon as the neighbors wake up, I'll give it a try.

Yes, that is it...

Yes, and thanks... The trigger for the horn is the black wire that you unplug from the horn.

I ordered Hella horns from Subimods: Subimods Hella Horns Kit. Got the horns, wiring harness & mounting bracket back in June of 2014 shortly after we bought our 2015 XT Touring. Back then, I paid $129.99 + $16.26 shipping = $146.25. Now, according to what I saw on the page linked above, they bundle the horns, harness & bracket as a kit for less than what I paid for selecting those items separately. The Subimods installation video can be found here: Hella Horns Mounting Video

Great instructions. I'm still struggling to understand where you wired into the horn switch. You said at the horn... I understand the concept, just not sure if you mean you made that connection at the OEM horn. Please help... Starting project next couple of days. Thanks in advance!

@Cbick You don't list what Forester you are driving, the OP had a 2015 SJ series.
If you are also driving an SJ you would only need to unplug the wire from the old horn and plug that wire to the new horn.

Have fun with your project
