2015 non-turbo FB25 CVT automatic, 130k, unknown service history
I saw mrsubaru's YT video about changing the CVT fluid, and it seems like you actually do need the transmission temperature since you have to add a little more fluid after it warms up a bit. It's not like Honda where you can just drain and refill like a normal transmission. Toyota officially has the transmission temp thing, but from the videos I've seen on it, you can probably get away with just doing a simple drain and fill without a scanner if you do it cold.
But with Subaru, you can't. You actually need the temp/scanner. So, are there any scan tools under $200 that do transmission temp? It seems to be less prevalent than I first thought!
At least it's not a turbo, which requires its own special fluid that seems to only be available by the 5 gallon bucket. Luckily, the non-turbo CVT fluid is sold by the quart, but I'll probably use Valvoline if I actually do it myself. Valvoline is amber in color, though I know the OE stuff is green. Castrol is red, but they do make good stuff.
How much does a Subaru dealer charge for the fluid change?
