Hello all, long time no post. I'm planning to install a Pioneer AVIC-W8400NEX in my wife's '04 Forester XS. I need the locations of the VSS and backup wires. I've been searching around in the forum and have found VSS referenced behind the instrument cluster or at the ECU, however it seems that in each case the model is an XT. Is the wire color and location the same across all models? I found this info on AVIC411, is this correct?
Speed Sense is the green/yellowwire at the ECM, 20 pin plug, pin 10

Also trying to find the backup/reverse wire location.

Thanks in advance

The location of the ECU, which I saw referenced on other threads as "under the glove box" which actually meant under the carpet and under a metal plate.

So based on the manual I was able to verify the previous info for the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) wire. It was a green with yellow wire on the plug B136, second plug from the top of the ECU.

There was however a discrepancy on the schematic that says it was supposed to be plug B137, but there was no green with yellow wire in that plug.

After peeling back the harness wrapping I verified that B136 had the correct wire and it matched the plug location in the above schematic.

I used PosiTap connectors recommended in another thread to tap into the wire then wrapped everything back up.

Next was the reverse signal wire and that had been referenced as behind the passenger side kick panel. The manual stated it is a Brown with yellow wire.

Tracing the rear harness back the plugs indicated in the schematic are located in a tough to reach area next to the front passenger seat.

But I did find the brown with yellow wire as shown in the service manual.

So I moved closer to the kick panel and I unwrapped the rear harness but found 4 brown with yellow wires.

I opened up the harness more and found that the wire leaving the indicated plug went into a splice block that connected 3 of the brown with yellow wires I had found. The splice block was just in front of the seat

I unwrapped the splice and found the wires had extra hanging out of the splice so I butt spliced my wire to one of those and wrapped everything back up.

I installed the Head unit, tested everything out
and it worked perfectly.
