@bman400 CVT fluid is used in the transfer clutch contained in the rear of the transmission called the extension housing. 4/5EATs use a similar design. What is separated is the front differential that uses gear oil. There is no transfer case on a Subaru.

@dtf139 I would not recommend keeping it in FWD forever. It is a diagnostic tool, not a drive management feature. Manual states to re-enable AWD after diagnosis is completed.

Hey everyone. Here’s an update on my torque binding issue.

After my last post I measured the resistance of the AWD solenoid through the connector sitting on top of the solenoid pack and got a reading of 3.8 ohms at 86 degrees of ambient temperature which is right in the middle of listed range of 2-4.5 ohms.

I don’t have much experience with transmissions and such so I was having a hard time thinking that the transfer case/clutch was the issue but I do have experience working with solenoids on airplanes. The solenoid made the most sense to me since it was only acting up after driving the car for a while and everything had heated up. Since Subaru does not make an approved replacement for the solenoid I purchased a relatively cheap($51.96) solenoid from Amazon but I had a bunch of things on my plate and didn’t get around to replacing the solenoid until last week.

The replacement was pretty straight forward and took me about 6 hours from start to finish but that included a few breaks for my back and also time to jerry rig a replacement for the ground lug on the solenoid harness that broke. This guy’s YouTube video was very helpful and I highly recommend it. Even with his warning about the ground lug, mine still broke.

So…the final verdict is that it is fixed. 😎

I have been driving it for a week now and even after driving for 2 hours and switching back and forth between AWD and FWD only, I cannot detect any torque binding.😎
