I was given my stepfather’s 2002 Forester about nine years ago when he stopped driving.

I’ve used it as my camping car and it has about 131,000 miles on it. It’s been a great little car, though I’m trying to track down a mystery: suddenly the rear passenger doors and hatchback stop responding to the lock/unlock button.

They just as suddenly started working two weeks ago when I had the driver’s side floor upholstery repaired, but today it’s back to not working again. It’s a mystery wrapped in an enigma.

Out of curiosity, why did you have the upholstery repaired? Water damage, by any chance?

According to the FSM for the 2002 model, the rear door lock actuators and rear gate lock are all on the same wires coming from the keyless entry control module. (Connector B97 from the body harness, connecting to R1 from the rear wiring harness.)

It's possible the pins inside these connectors have become corroded if exposed to excessive moisture (hence my original question). I'm guessing that in the process of replacing the driver's side upholstery, this connection was taken apart/reconnected, or jostled, just enough that the connection was (temporarily) re-established.

The same could apply if there was a broken wire (temporary re-connection), and normal vibration and/or environmental conditions broke the connection (again).
