Better the headlight than sheet metal, in my view.
Years ago, on a West Coast interstate, an Aunt of mine had her VW Passat struck by a solid piece of metal weighing the better part of a pound. It turned out to be the handle from the type the hydraulic controls found on heavy load carrying OTR truck trailers or the like. I could only guess the damage if it hit the windshield or the car body, let alone the undercarriage.
She had no idea she was struck by it, because I found it embedded in the radiator grill. The plastic grill was the only thing damaged. Pure luck.
I have driven a lot in Europe over the last three decades; France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Northern Italy, mostly. The roads are well maintained and spotless compared with here. Germany in particular with France being less so than the rest.
In 2015, I saw a multi-vehicle accident on an Autobahn in southern Germany in which a Honda Civic ended up on its roof. While waiting to pass the accident, the most impressive thing aside from how well the emergency crews were equipped, how organized they were, and how polite and focused all the other drivers were in getting past the accident in an orderly manner, was how thorough the roadway was cleaned of accident debris and fluids by the responding firemen and highway crews. Nothing but nothing from the accident was left on the roadway.
