Liftgate rubber button - what is this for?

My dealer rep told me to press a rubber button next to the power liftgate switch and the license plate. after I did this the liftgate went crazy and would'nt open. It had to be reset. What in the world is this button for? It isn't mentioned in the manual.

The button on the right of the lift gate button also is the “lock vehicle” button when not in the program pin mode. A quick way to lock the vehicle when departing from the back of the vehicle, such as when passengers have piled out. Just push that button and the vehicle is locked. I am too lazy to get the fob out of my pocket.

EDIT: from pg 145 of the manual.

To Lock the doors using the power rear gate lock button:
Carry the access key fob, and press the power rear gate lock button. All doors, the rear gate and the fuel lid are locked, and the rear gate will be closed. Also, the hazard warning flashers will flash once, and an electronic chirp will sound once.
