Koeppel Subaru, Queens, NY

Just wanted to report bad experience with buying my Subaru Forester with Koeppel Subaru. They tricked me buying GAP insurance and key replacement program with something called Nation Safe Drivers. The dealer is refusing to cancel. Overall both these policies cost me 2K, which is a part of loan through bank. My recommendation is to stay away from Koeppel Subaru. I was just wondering if other members had similar experience with Koeppel Subaru.

I had a terrible experience there as well, ended up buying mine from Bay Ridge Subaru instead.

I shopped there last year(didnt end up buying from them) My sales person was great but when time came to meet the F&I team we left unhappy needless to say. GAP insurance shouldnt cost you more than $600 at best and some auto insurnace companies offer it for much less. That key replacement plan seems odd to me. There are lots of "plans" out there and if you do not read the fine print there goes your thousands of dollars

I live 6 blocks away from this place, about 1/2 mile. I will never go there again. I took my moms outback there on my day off for a recall. While it was there I told them to replace my air filter and cabin filter because they had a special. I brought the outback home and on a whim checked the air filter. It wasn't changed. Was not a new filter.
I was pissed off and drove my car right into the service area and started screaming and cursing them out. They **** themselves. I took the air filter and threw it on the floor in their shop. I demanded they change the cabin filter in front of me. The tech took it out and it was filthy.
They didn't want to tell me who worked on my car because they,thought I'd beat him up,lol.
It's sad that I'm walking distance from them and I can't trust them for service. I go all the way out to Bohemia ny to Performance auto solutions for service, and performance work.

@BLKFORESTER05 , dang. Yeah that's messed up for sure. Always good to hold them accountable, and goes to show how valuable a reputable mechanic is. Unless this was just how the dealership is run, I'd imagine a tech is now without a job.

Wow, that's crazy. GP coverage comes with many insurance policies for free if you have full coverage, or if not free, it is a free cheap premium.

I know nothing.

I didn't feel like I had a good experience with their service department. A replacement tire and rim for a 8 year old car cost me over $600, and they didn't bother to call me when the car was ready.

MSRP for a set of 4 rims is $700.

Just to inform you, if you have not known, Koeppel auto group as well as several other dealers in the Tri state area were sued & ordered to pay back restitution money to customers who bought these costly and often inflated after sale products. Refer to link below.

Most of these dealer profit items can be canceled by calling the third party providers directly.

My friend insisted on buying a new car that she couldnt afford. According to the finance guy at the dealer she could only get approved for a 6 or 7 (i forget which) loan if she bought the extended warranty. But he told us we can just buy the warranty to get approved and cancel it once the loan was approved. Not sure how true this was or if he just hoped we wouldnt cancel it. But we had no issues canceling it and getting the credit toward the loan, which was well over $1000.

Check the fine print on your receipts. It is unlikely any warranties you bought are actually from Subaru/dealer.

Back in 2012 when I was shopping for a Forester, I had made a deal with Star Subaru in Bayside. My credit was excellent but the only way they could approve me for a loan was if they added the Subaru Gold Plus warranty. I was a bit shocked and knew I was getting taken for a ride. The deal ended up not going thru because when I went to pick up the car, it had damage and I did not accept it. I am glad I didn't go thru with the deal. I Went to Gregoris in Valley stream & I have bought 5 cars from them to this day. Gregoris never once pressured me to buy any after sale products and never told me that I needed those after sale products to get approved for the financing. It still amazes me how this type of practice is still being done.

I live in Queens, however when purchasing my car I ended up going to Metric Subaru at Long Island.Some of the city dealerships were not transparent about giving a number over email correspondence, a few dealerships that ended up settling a price started changing their story or became very pushy about adding services once I showed up in person. Compared to those Metric Subaru was a breeze to deal with. No pressure on anything, I ended up buying extended warranty thru them, the price seemed a bit higher but it didn't impede my purchasing as rest of the experience was much pleasurable.

I came across this article on jalopnik, and to me it resonated with the attitude I experienced when I had my emergency.

Prior to my Subaru craze, I was looking into Honda several years back. I visitied about 4 Dealers in my area and got completely turned off to the brand. All the sales staff I dealt with had no clue of the product they are selling and all pressured me to buy that day with their rip off financing tactics.

I live about a mile from this dealership and was going to have them look at my CEL P0011 code. Maybe not....

Anybody know of a good independent Subaru repair shop in Queens or Long Island?

Their service departments are different from sales and I think this thread is mostly about sales.

I went to Koppel to address a TSB and they were okay. They have a new facility garage on 58th Street in Woodside and it's decent. Star is the only other one in Bayside. I haven't used their service but their parts department is okay. I don't think you'll find any "great" dealers in the city. Just gotta suck it up and find the least worst of the bunch.
