Vehicle Identification Number - VIN (merged thread)

Wanted to ask a question regarding the chassis codes in the thread that is present in Vehicle Specifications, but apparently those threads are only open to reply by specific users.

Where should such questions be posted?

RalliSpec uses standard Subaru chassis codes and abbreviations in our product descriptions.
It is important to note that many models were debuted one model year earlier in Japan than in US.
Chassis codes are as follows (according to Japanese models):
1st letter determines model type:
G = Impreza
B = Legacy
S = Forester
2nd letter determines body type:
C = Sedan 1st gen. (1993-2000 Impreza, 1989-1994 Legacy) + Coupe (Impreza)
D = Sedan 2nd gen. (2001-current Impreza, 1995-1999 Legacy)
E = Sedan 3rd gen. (2000-2003 Legacy)
L = Sedan 4th gen. (2004-current Legacy)
F = Wagon 1st gen. (1993-2000 Impreza, 1998-2001 Forester)
G = Wagon 2nd gen. (2001-current Impreza, 1995-1999 Legacy, 2002-current Forester)
H = Wagon 3rd gen. (2000-2003 Legacy)
P = Wagon 4th gen. (2004-current Legacy)
3rd letter determines engine type:
A = 2nd gen. Impreza WRX w/ 2.0L turbo
B = 2nd gen. Impreza WRX STi w/ 2.0L turbo high output (we also use this to refer to 2.5L STi)
8 = 1st gen. Impreza WRX w/ 2.0L turbo (includes STi)
5 = Forester & Legacy 2.0L turbo (we also use this to refer to US 2.5L turbo Forester/Legacy)
4th letter determines body revision (generally changes each model year):
A = 1st year
B = 2nd year
C = 3rd year
etc. (for GC8 models C = both 1995 & 1996 model years)
An example would be:
"GDB A/B/C" = Impreza Sedan STi model 2nd gen. (New Age) model year 2001, 2002, 2003 (in US
this would also apply to 2004 Impreza STi because 2003 japanese model year is equivalent to 2004)
A second example would be:
"GD & GG" = applies to all 2nd gen. (New Age) Impreza models regardless of body or engine type
Engine codes are as follows:
EJ20G = 2.0L turbo WRX engine used in early GC8 models
EJ20K = 2.0L turbo WRX STi engine used in Version III & IV models
EJ205 = 2.0L turbo WRX engine used in all 1999 to current WRX models
EJ207 = 2.0L turbo WRX STi engine used in all 1999 to current STi models
EJ255 = 2.5L turbo engine used in US Forester XT & Legacy 2.5L turbo models (+ some overseas)
EJ257 = 2.5L turbo engine used in US Impreza STi models
Are there any other / more specific codes for the different SG body types? And while we're at it, SF's? I have seen at least three different SF front end and rear end configs.

I've seen some people refer to their '07 / '08 as SG6, but according to this list shouldn't these still technically be SG5-(B's) or something?

Just a little confused.

Thanks!

Vehicle identification number (vin) - merged thread

Hi!

I'm just wondering if any of you here tried to decode your VIN of your vehicle. My vehicle is a Forester 2.5XT with 4AT.

When I decoded my VIN, it turned out the it doesn't coincide with the actual Forester I got. my VIN is JF1SH9LT5CG276472. The first 5 digits are correct (japan made, I'll explain this later), the 6th digit which is for Impreza/Tribeca and 3.6L engine, the seventh is L where nothing is for Forester, 8th is I don't know (not listed in the Decoder), 9th is 5 (no idea), 10th is C which is correct, 2012 model, 11th is G which is for 5 speed MT but mine is 4 AT, 12th to 17th is for Outback Wagon.

Now, let's go back to the first 5 digits which seems to be correct. The VIN that starts with JF1 is only for Impreze, WRX, and STI while the SH is correct for Forester. Now, Forester VIN should start JF2 and not JF1. Here's what should be my VIN: 1st 5 digits JF2SH - forester/made in japan
6th digit G, H, or J - 2.5L turbo
7th digit A - 2.5 XT
8th digit C or D - I do not know
9th digit Any number - I do not know
10th digit C - 2012 year model
11th digit H - 4 speed AT
12th to 17 - should start at 400001

Why don't you try yours?

Well for starters, not all Foresters are made at the same plant. That is where the difference between JF1 and JF2 come into play.

Now I'll break things down for you from what I know. JF1SH9LT5CG2xxxxx

JF1S - is the general start to the Forester VIN's since '97.
H - is just stating that you've got the third generation chassis
9 - indicates that your car has the higher compression, td-04 WRX based engine which has been in the Forester XT vin since MY06 when the SG5 became the SG9.
L - indicated the 2.5XT Limited trim level (Canadian Model)
T - no idea here... sorry
5CG - all makes sense
2 on the other hand doesn't seem right, but since you've got a JF1 car instead of a JF2 it could be Subaru's method of keeping the two plant's production separate.

I found this Russian site most useful in decoding both European and US models, it provides very detailed info except for year of production.

http://www.carrol.ru/_pages/subaru/

You can also click on the result, to look for workshop manual diagrams for your Subaru.

Question VIN code country of origin

I spent the last 30 minutes searching for the answer with no luck, so here goes:

For ordering parts, after market stuff, the fit sometimes requires knowing the country of origin. Like mud guards are different sizes.

My first 5 digits of my VIN is JF2SJ, the 5th letter is country of origin, but I find no interpretation for where "J" is from. I bought this in Houston, Texas. is there a table? Is SJ the "USDM" United States Domestic Made?

A straight google search gives this, along with many others:

VIN Codes: World Manufacturer's Identification

The site was last updated in 2006. Thanks for trying. Another link was more current, for 2009. I have a 2017 Forester. Oh well.

Oops... I didn't notice, just assumed such a site would keep current. Doing straight google searches (vs the forums') gives a few, such as this one, which leads with a 2017 example:

VIN: how to read a Subaru Vehicle Identification Number
J = Japan
F = Fuji Heavy Industries
2 = Passenger Vehicle
SJ = Generation/Platform of your Forester

Is the next character a 6 or a 9 ? (We've since found out it is an 'A' probably due to the new series of engine.)

FWIW SJ's exist in the US, Australasia, Europe

VIN Number - accurate??

Hello there.
So I finally got my 2011 Forester, here in Canada.
I'm still a little unsure about the trim of this vehicle.
The VIN number says it's an XT biut it really doesnt seem like it is.
It doesnt have the hood scoop, indicators on the side mirrors etc.
I love the car but I dont think it's an XT.
Is there another way of determining the trim?
thanks.

@Tim2011forester an XT would have a turbocharger, TMIC & a scoop. Does your 2011 have this? If yes, it is an XT. If no, not an XT.
