I would advise to choose other route. Move Moskow-Samara-Ekaterinburg-Omsk-Novosibirsk-GornoAltaysk-Tashanta, then to cross border to Mongolia, and drive across Mongolia up to Ulan Bator and further. From Gorno-Altaisk up to Tashanta there will be very beautiful site the named Altai (look at Altai Mountains - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, Some my photos placed here). At desire I can meet you in Novosibirsk and together reach to border with Mongolia.

Distance from Moscow up to Novosibirsk approximately 3000 kilometers (4 days). From Novosibirsk up to border with Mongolia - about 1500 kilometers (2 days).

Also you can drive to the Baikal Lake.

At 1,637 meters (5,371 ft), Lake Baikal is the deepest lake in the world, and the largest freshwater lake in the world by volume, holding approximately twenty percent of the world's total surface fresh water
. It's very beautiful place!
(look at Lake Baikal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). Distance from Novosibirsk to Baikal = 1500 kilometres.
Some photos from my last trip to Baykal placed here, here and here)

Good luck!

One more proposal so far for the route from Russia through Kazakhstan.
It depends on where you're going to enter Kazakhstan:

If you want to go through Astrakhan city (Russia), then:
a) You can go to Atyrau, Aktubinsk, Kustanay, Astana, Karaganda, Alma-Ata and then to China. Quite a good road (Astana - Alma-Ata even excellent).
or you can take another one
b) Atyrau, Aktobe, Aralsk, KzylOrda, Chimkent, Almaty - this south route is somewhat worse than the first one. Some parts of the route even can not be called 'a road' at all.

If you go into Kazakhstan through Orenburg (Troitsk) city (Russia), then:
Enter Kazakhstan via Kustanay and then move towards Astana.

If through Chelyabinsk (Russia), then:
Enter via Kurgan (Petuhovo), Petropavlovsk, Kokchetav, Astana and then Almaty.

If though Omsk (Russia), then:
Enter via Pavlodar, [Astana, Alma-Ata] or [Ust-Kaman, through east part of Kazakhstan to Alma-Ata]. Not so good roads.

----
Also you can take a look at the route of the Evan McGregor & Charlie Burmen from the "Long Way Round" (route images.).

There are still no roads in the area of Atyrau-Aralsk-and further along the route shown.

P.S. Sorry if I misspelled any name :)

Hi Guys, sorry for not getting back sooner, as you can imagine i am extremely busy preparing for the trip. we are setting off this sunday, still one or two small little things to do. I have attached a photo of my forester. Thanks for all the advise. The name we have picked for the trip is "SUBAROUTE". currently building a website, I'll post the address when i have it completed.

Noel, did you bother approaching Subaru for any form of sponsorship whatsoever?

Were you able to get any kind of sponsorship? I would have thought a tire company would have loved to pick that one up! I'm also surprised that Subaru didn't pick it up either, that would be some pretty great press!

How long, again, do you expect it to take? I'm curious when the webpage is up. I would never rule out a trip like this!

Isn't there a rule somewhere about not using the same avatar as someone else?
