I'm still not understanding exactly how X-mode is any different than the existing system for example. I was under the impression that the current system would simulate a LSD by applying the brakes on the spinning wheel, which seems exactly what X-mode does?

The 20% improvement in the EPA mileage estimates (if accurate) is HUGE as far as the number of buyers that will consider a Forester as a purchase option. I am happy with the 4EAT, but the move to the CVT was absolutely necessary to remain competitive. Many buyers were not even considering the Forester because of the 4 speed tranny and the middling mpg numbers. The fact that the EPA mileage numbers of the AWD Subaru can be very competitive with FWD vehicles is impressive.

The possibility that the 2014 XT will get the same mpg as the current NA engine, with 250hp on call, may be significant enough to increase the percentage of buyers that go for the XT option.

Die hard SF and SG owners may opt for the more compact XV Crosstrek. Subaru is one of the few car companies that really listens to its customers and delivers.
I think that in addition to the original Subaru "cult" following, Subaru has penetrated the mainstream a LOT because of its wonderful Consumer Reports and other press ratings--it is the only brand with ALL of its models recommended by CR and is just about at the top in terms of average reliability of all its models.

This is not a fluke, and clearly is responsible for the expansion of Subaru sales. I don't buy vehicles like I buy refrigerators (solely based on reliability) but enjoy quirky vehicles (have owned things like a SAAB Sonett and a 900, Austin Healeys, a 5 cylinder Acura TL, etc.) And the Forester, with a stick, kind of amuses me with its unique mechanical presence.

Yeah, that pretty much describes me. Although I like the mechanicals of the 2014 XT I've not yet grown to love some of the design decisions. Ultimately though, a Subaru owner can live with ugly. A 2014 or 2015 XT would be my fourth subaru...actually, my fourth Forester.

I'm guessing it's more marketing than innovation. From the sounds of it it's exactly what VDC and traction control does, but they had to give it a catchy name.

I'm tempted by the XT, but I think I'll go vanilla. It'll be cheaper (I like to go for upper-level trims, so I'll get more features for the same amount of buck), it'll get better economy, it won't prefer premium, and it comes with 17" wheels instead of 18" ones (I prefer smaller ones - to an extent - as they're cheaper to replace). I'm excited because as long as there are no significant flaws present when they come over here, I think I've finally found a suitable replacement for my pony :) (I'm still anxious to see how the 2.5L CX-5 and new Rav4 do, though.

that black looks sharp when its rainy. I wonder if it's the same black as before, though. I had an 07 2.5X whose black I got tired of. Too much green/blue and if the light wasn't right it looked dull. Maybe it was the Florida sunshine....

I still don't understand the rear 3/4 of the 2014. Why reduce visibility?! Well, because if you don't this thing looks like a Tiguan from the side....

I'm totally loving the front of the XT.

Was kinda hoping it would look ok with the 08 Forester Sport XT wheels (the Spec C RA kind) but I guess they would look small on this gen.

It has down hill descent control, and the slower you go, the more aggressive the simulated LSD is. Believe under 13MPH is the most aggressive stage. Then it has a less aggressive mode, and turns off (or goes back to normal VDC, with disabled descent control) after a certain MPH that I have forgotten. Someone mentioned it a few pages ago (or probably a lot seeing how fast this thread is moving!) that Subaru of Australia was touting that the new forester would be much better off road than the previous generation.

I wouldn't always rely on Subaru Australia, but it'd be a good thing if they were right in what they have said. I think the SJ is looking pretty good, however when the time comes to replace my MY05 (I've been told that mum's MY09 is being replaced by a XV in a few years) I've got a few cars on the shortlist to actually look at and drive. The SJ is still a strong contender though.
