Good purchase or dumb idea? 2004 FXT

Just bought my 1st subaru; FXT
Before i begin, i do have some mechanical knowledge. I have done clutches and heads and timing belts on hondas for years. Never worked much on subarus and never owned one in my life. Until now....
I am a first time subaru owner even though i havent seen my car yet.... Here's the story. I was going to purchase a car (2004 subaru forester 2.5xt with a manual transmission) from a dealership roughly 1000 miles away for $6,500. The car has some minor dings and dents and has 149k miles. I planned to fly down there to look at the car and then make the purchase. A few days before my flight, the dealership called me and said that a technician had diagnosed low compression on one cylinder, and that i was not able to purchase the car. I insisted that i still buy it since i have been having such a hard time finding my FXT with a manual trans. We came upon a new purchase price of $2,992. I've decided I do not want to drive down there to look at a car i know isnt perfect, so i decided shipping will be easier. With fees and shipping, i am getting a 2004 XT with 149k miles, manual trans, (not limited trim unfortunately) for $4,000. All i know of is that AT LEAST 1 cylinder has low compression. What do you think? Am i dumb for buying it sight unseen? I am purchasing from a reputable toyota dealer that took it in on trade.

fixer-upper

So is it safe to say you still have $2500 setting around to help get the FXT up and running correctly?

Jeff, I would say i have it sitting around, but i can come up with a few grand. I think i want to do a mild build on it eventually. I figure rebuild the engine now, then do turbo, and intercooler etc down the road a bit.

Bobby. I am unsure. The dealer just said the "one compression reading didnt meet their quaity standards." The salesman i was dealing with isnt mechanically inclined. So i wasnt getting the whole story on the engine. I do know it runs and drives though. They sent me a video of it putting around their parking lot. I have a daily driver. I got this for a little project car. I may turn it into my daily down the road a bit.

Those compression reading will give you a better ideal of how serious & how soon you'll need to address the problem.

BTW, I purchased my '07 FSXT North of Seattle at a Chevy dealership.

I intend to do a compression test the day i take delivery. My only concern is a wed test on a boxer motor. Does that work?
