Am interested in how the Forester's perform with snow and ice tires in
Alpine environment.

Def depends on the tire. Short answer- eats it up.

Yes mostly it depend on tire but which generation and model are you thinking about?

98-08 X model does not have LSD and it have less tendency to fish tail on ice.

04-08 X Premium and XT came with LSD and on certain condition could make the tail end snap happy but also more capable on deep snow.

08+ have VDC which supposed to be the best for control but no so much for having fun.

As a Canadian with snowy conditions for 6 months a year, I recommend a set of winter tires. I have a set and I would not want to drive in the winter without them.
