Hi Mike. If it is the fuel pump, it's not a major job to get at it. There are two oblong hatches, about six by four inches in the boot just behind the rear seats, one on the left and one on the right. The pump is under the larger cover which is on the right/drivers side (UK) and requires a phillps screwdriver, 10mm socket and some thin nose pliers. Sea Scooby did a very nice picture post on the whole job. Put "changing fuel pump" into search and it's about half way down labeled "Changing to Walbro Fuel Pump". As I said it's not difficult but it should be done on less than 1/3 of a tank of fuel otherwise you will get pressure spillage when some of the hoses are released. Most difficult part is wiggling the pump out with it's ganglian attachments, and then back in again along with some petrol spillage from boot to wherever you are going to inspect it, an old T shirt/towel or whatever will be useful. If you can locate the fuel pump relay, turn the ignition off and put your finger on it then turn the ignition on, you should feel it it click if not hear it. If the relay is gone I guess that would be the handiest job for replacement. Also, I'm pretty sure you can hear the fuel pump running with the ignition on before the engine is started, mine's quite loud. Is there a fuse for the fuel circuit under the bonnet? If you need to replace the pump and want to put in a Walbro, check first but I'm pretty sure the 98 uses the 341, mine is a 99 and it uses the 341, NOT the 342. Hope this is of some help.

i found the fuel pump, it was located on the rhs behind the seatbelt anchor point of the rear seat- as someone said under that black foam compartment

checked the fuel pump relay which clicked on ignition so took the punt and
replaced the fuel pump :woohoo:

and it fired up

replacement pump i used was a GOSS-p/n GE079
they are made in australia and cost me $150aus
