I have a 2004 forester 2.5 non turbo and the head gaskets failed. I’m curious if the heads from a 2007 outback 2.5i will work as replacements? I haven’t worked on that many Subaru’s to know the difference between the two. They look very similar but there are a couple things different and I’m hoping those are just cosmetic differences. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Will work, but you must change the cam and crankshaft timing belt pulleys, and use the correct timing belt. I have an '09 engine in my wife's 99 that way. It does have a slight and occasional knock on acceleration, but otherwise runs great. There are threads about how to do this someplace.
