OK the Wife's Celica is just getting to 17 years old and needs replacing so thought I'd come on here for idea's!

Current car is a Celica ST202 2.0 (mid 90's 4 headlamp model) the replacement has to be something that looks 'good' and 'sporting' and is genuinely sporty enough to be credable.

Short list is:-
Celica GT4 (youngest is already 14 so that's an issue!)
Supra (youngest is 10 years old and they are very overpriced)
Celica GT (upto 2000 - doesn't feel like progress!)
Hyundai Coupe V6
Mazda RX8
Audi TT
Impreza WRX (Blob, she doesn't like Bugeye's!)

She's looked at an RX8 and really really likes it, they are silly cheap (2004 for circa £5K), economy not an issue on her 4k miles/year and it's lovely to drive if a little gutless in the midrange.

So any other suggestions?

Trust me on this.....try an MG ZS180. Forget the badge and reputation of MG/Rover. Proper drivers car.

Yes I know the 180 well, but no way will she go for the look! (or is that lack of look!)

I'm going to sell my 98 wagon Impreza if interested Simon ....its a bit clangy on start up but once warm it seems fine 121,000 miles....had lots done to it recently ....would sell it for 1600 quid ? ...but maybe a bit high on the miles for you .

my list would definately be Supra 1st without question , i've had a few of them and looked after properly they are more bullet proof than a bullet proof thingy , an amazing car ...mine were all twin turbos though

what about his and hers foresters :)

what about a quality old school mini cooper - proper fun drive!..... non of this BMW (not so) mini rubbish.

does she not like Mx5s?...... they are reliable little motors, and really good fun too!

when the snow fell a couple of weeks ago i counted 11 abandoned RX8s on the A3 between Portsmouth and waterlooville (2 miles ish!) - however i do love em!

Agreed, it looks dreadful! One of the best bargain cars ever now though. put a Quaife in and apparently it is one of the best handling hatches out there. A friend of mine rally's the ZR and specialises in MG stuff. Anyway, Id go Evo 6 as a car for the missus then.

Our head of chassis at work was the chassis team leader on the Zs, reckons it was the best handling MG Z of the 3.

Supra is a good car, just perhaps a littl big, also for a good car they are about 50-60% dearer than the others.

His and hers Foresters is an absolute no, she loves driving it, doesn't like the look, nor (sorry F200) does she like Classic's!

FJ, need a 4 seater hence the MX5 is out!

Yes the wife is very choosy, but then she married me so that is to be expected ;-)

Get the RX8 with a warranty.

I'd get it for the steering alone.

if this is the choice then i'd go for the RX-8. mate of mine has one and i've driven it a few times and its very different. Seems like theres little power but its just delivered differently. however fuel consumption might shock you.

Dont go for a non turbo impratza, honestly there sshlit

I stumbled across an ad for a V6 clio the other day - they are reasonably priced now.

You say you need 4 seats though - shame someone dumped a V6 where the rear seats should be!

I have always liked them but never driven one - are they any good?

We considered the XKR, she reckons it looks a bit old man ish (can't think why LOL), she likes the Honda but its a 2 seater.

We'll look at a TT, I've driven one once (10 years ago) and can't remember what the rear seats are like!

As for the others, apart from an Impreza (WRX not nastily aspirated please MDG, they have less power than the Celica!) she definately doesn't want either a saloon or a coupe that still looks too much like the saloon its based on!

We drove an RX8 yesterday and that is pushing all the right buttons, looks good, practical enough, drove very nicely (nicely enough that I never got my hands on the keys!) and certainly looks like its at the top of the list! Local dealer has a nice looking blob WRX in so off to see that soon!

Yes I've suggested a 200SX but the wife wasn't keen, UK cars look a bit boring, hadn't thought about the S15 JDM's, good idea, thanks.

Clio V6, no ta, I want her alive thanks! (last one I saw was upside down on the M23 having lost it coming down the on slip!)
