I just purchased a 2011 subaru forester from a friend

As of now, the thing is still sitting in my driveway because I have yet to buy insurance for it

Where can I find the cheapest auto insurance for this thing?

I don't really believe in shelling out a lot of money every month for insurance. I more or less view it as a scam. I just want to be able to legally drive this thing around.

Therefore, I want the state minimums and the cheapest possible rates.

Can anybody point me in a good direction? Again, the cheapest possible insurance.

I'm looking at 2011 Subaru Forester 2.5L 4-cyl. AWD 5-speed Manual True Cost to Own and I see that the average rates for these things are over 2k per year. I'm hoping to get it for half of that.

Cheers.

I take it this is your first vehicle and you have never had insurance previously. I'm also guessing you are under 25. If both are correct, there is no such thing as cheap insurance. Without previous coverage and being under 25, you are most likely going to pay top dollar, especially if you go for full coverage. You can get coverage that only covers the other guy, your own liability, repairing your own vehicle and various combinations of all of them.

What you need to do is talk to actual insurance agents, not ask on Internet forums. People here cannot give you quote, just guesses. All that said, READ ALL THE FINE PRINT CAREFULLY AND ASK QUESTIONS.

Hate to say it, but NOT getting good insurance from a reputable company is far more expensive than any premium. I can't help but suggest you get full coverage, with a modest deductible. I can also recommend State Farm. My family has been with them for over 25 years, and they've paid out without hassle, and without dropping us, the few times my bone-head father decided to wreck his car.

Imcan also agree with the above poster, being under 25 bites! Can't wait til my next birthday.

You described me perfectly.

Been getting quotes from different guys all afternoon.

Nothing really stands out as THE BEST.

I got a quote from 4autoinsurancequote.com for a mere $59/month, but they appear to be a small time company, so I don't feel safe insuring with them. But their rates are appealing.

I think I might end up actually insuring with http://www.usaa.com. They quoted me at $70/month, which is the best I've gotten from a major company. They only insure military members, but somehow I qualify as my dad is a member.

Good deal :)

I personally cannot recommend USAA. They were one of the most dishonest companies I've ever had the displeasure of having to deal with. Their insured party hit me and they actually made an illegal cash offer to get me to settle the claim before the damages and doctor's bills had even been settled. I really should have taken them to court, but they paid me what I asked, which was simply the cost to repair my car, my medical and lost work. YMMV.

25 has little to do with it; it is based on number of years of driving - having more will bring your rate down. Your rates will NOT automatically drop when you turn 25; that's a bit of a myth, especially if you don't have a clean record.

I'm 17 and my insurance is about $200 a month, on my parents' plan, but then it covers pretty much everything, AFAIK. There is no such thing as cheap insurance when you're young, unfortunately... My friend owns a truck and his insurance cost is probably evil; he sure complains about it enough.

This....

One other thing (you said you were young). Stratistically you are the type of driver that needs insurance most. You are statistically 4 times the risk of a seasoned mature driver. And don't forget : Any liability that you incur in an accident [that substandard insurance doesn't cover] is not dischargable for you you have to pay it back (with interest even if it takes your whole life. Its not a scam its paying for security.

Just another point of view. :icon_wink:

USAA has treated me great and had the cheapest rates I've found anywhere. I've only ever heard customers of theirs have stellar comments about them. If you can get insurance through them, I doubt you'll find better cheaper. I had to make a claim for serious hail damage a couple years ago and they were great to work with and it didn't affect my rates.

BTW $70/month is great, especially at your age. I paid about $250/month at your age for a 5 year old Nissan with full coverage (had a lien). I think I still pay more than $70/month at 38 years old for full coverage on my 2009 Legacy. I doubt you'll find a rate from a reputable insurance co for less.

Do you have a loan on the car? If so, the lender may impose minimum insurance coverage levels.

I've been with Geico the last 6 years, but shop around periodically. I can never find anyone else that can beat them on price. They are generally 30-40% lower on the premium than anyone else I compare with.

I have Allstate and get full coverage ($1,000 collision/$100 comprehensive ded.) for just over $100/mo on my 2014 XT Touring.

I am 22 and have a completely clean driving history (not even a parking ticket.)

They have been easy to deal with thus far (only a broken windshield), but I have heard mixed reviews when it comes to having them deal with being in an accident.

It all depends where you live and the vehicle is garaged as they call it.

In Jersey here the rates are drastically different if you live out in the boondocks compared if live in the inner cities like Newark, Jersey City or Paterson.

When I say drastically different, that could be an understatement. You're talking as much a $2500 difference for a 6 month policy from one location to another.

Don't sacrifice good/great coverage for "cheap" insurance. Just shop around and find what's best for you. Personally I have Farmers and I've been happy with them, they are a little more expensive than others but have worked out well for me especially when I hit a deer in my last car. Be sure to add in things like renter/home owner insurance if that works for you.

Liberty Mutual has a relationship with Subaru and offers special discounts for Subaru owners. I got the information from Subaru add part of my VIP Program package. I checked into it and it turned out to be significantly less than my current insurance. I switched my two cars and homeowners insurance to them. About $650/year savings for me.

Cheapest car insurance is for liability only. Pay it in at least 6 month increments instead of monthly, it is cheaper. Since you view insurance as a scam, there is no need to buy collision coverage for self inflicted damage to your own vehicle. Take financial responsibility for your own actions to your personal property. Or perhaps a cheaper car makes sense for your current financial situation.
