I am on the verge of buying a 2002 "S" model, 109k mi, auto trans, premium option pack, and am wondering what I can expect in mileage when driven to get as good as possible (which was how I drove my Outback).

This 2002 is 4sp automatic w/4=OD, same engine size (2.5L) as my OB.
If I am paying attention to mileage what can I expect?
Any sweet speeds?

I just retired my 97 Outback (250k) 5 spd. I could routinely get 25mpg combined, and easily 26-27 on local hiway. I could even get 29-30 on long interstate trips of constant 65mph. (Oddly, it got better at 65 than 55, measured over many trips).

it really all depends on driving habits/terrain.

i have a well taken care of 2001 S 4EAT with around 140,000 miles that gets 23-27 mpg on rough mountain roads.

In cold weather in surburban driving about 22 mpg. Warm weather 25 mpg. 29 on a trip if you are lucky. That is very gentle driving.

2002 MY and earlier are usually needing a headgasket. Obviously 105K miles for the timing belt/water pump/seals/ Itler, etc.

My '02 S with 124k miles struggles to get 20mpg in cold weather on Winter gas in mixed city Interstate driving. It does a couple of mpg better in the Spring and Fall. The previous owner took really bad care of it and I suspect I have some semi-clogged injectors and heavily carboned up combustion chambers from 104k miles on cheap gas.

My 2002 s premium with full tune up, timing belt, synthetic in rebuilt auto transmission, with 120k is getting about 22 MPG going up to the mountains. In town, stop and go trafic, it gets 18. On the highway, it gets about 23.2. I am trying to figure out ways to consistently get 24-26 on the highway.

I have changed the spark plugs, air filter, ran a can of bg44k through, changed the fuel filter after...

Any suggestions?

WOW....... I feel really blessed.

My 1999 S with auto consistently gets 24-26 mpg, usually right at 25 mpg combined city/highway driving. Doesn't matter if I drive it easy or like speed racer, it is pretty consistent.

Have a 2002 L Automatic with 113,000 miles
I get routinely 26-27 mpg....commute is about 26 miles each way, with half on the highway, and half on secondary roads. I have a pretty light foot, so I go easy on the gas
I find the sweet spot for the mpg to be about 60 mph on the highway....once I go above 65 or higher, the mpg really drops off.
Winter drops to appx 24 or so, as sometimes I warm the car up before heading off to work

My 97 Forester S Turbo Auto gives low 20's in town driving, 27 on a longer journey and averages about 25. I reckon the sweet spot is 55-60 MPH. Remember to enjoy the loud pedal occasionally, who cares what the MPG is !!.
