The charcoal canister. It recycles fumes in the EVAP system, primarily from the gas tank I believe.

I guess if it makes it more exciting for you, you could make believe that it is a digital image storage device for your secret, high resolution camera headlights and that the images are remotely, periodically downloaded by a Japanese spy that is living covertly in DC somewhere but yeah, it's really just charcoal, lol.
