The 1999 Forester automatic I bought last week has a very faded sticker at the rear of the shifter console.
The sticker reads ' Shift Lock'.
What does this mean?

The shift lock keeps the car from being shifted into gear when the ignition is off, and the brake is not applied. It is a safety device. The button allows you to shift the car without the ignition or brake on.

Thanks skullmurdoc, this is available on every Auto vehicle I have ever driven ... I was hoping it may be something new to me ; )

I see the faded sticker as well... but can't locate the button?!
