Just a stupid question I can't seem to find the answer to. I bought a VF39 I am slightly sketched by. Figured if I poured oil in the return or supply line, it should hold it, but I do get slow leaking from the hot and cold side (with the turbo in various positions).

But then I read that turbo "seals" might not really seal unless things are spinning, pressure is built, and the turbo is upright as per it's design. Can anyone comment? Am I worrying too much?

Are there signs of burnt oil, blow by, or discoloring on turbine wheel or nut? The fact that it is leaking on the hot and cold side actually eases my mind a bit since leaking on the compressor side is almost unheard of (tells me this could be normal). Past that I can't give you much insight or first hand experience.

Nah, that side is clean. Nothing like that in the outlet area either, that's a good point!
