@SueBrew

I used the taller filter on my 2010 Impreza. Didn't hang down far enough to be a problem.

Mostly just for simplicity, in keeping stock between the '17 Forester and the Impreza.

As long as the body/gasket diameter is the same, and the threads are the same, it should be good.

The only downside would be in extreme off road, but then you would (should) have a skid plate for that.

I normally buy WIX filters (NAPA Platinum) or the Subaru OEM depending on which one is cheaper. Recently, I was unable to get either as they were both unavailable plus the OEM on Ebay was being offered at a crazy high price. Instead, I bought the Fram XG at Wally World for about $ 7. I change my oil every 5k which with my low yearly miles works out to be about 2x/year. I suspect the Fram will be fine.

Why even go that far?

If in the USA, The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act specifically mandates that manufacturers can’t force owners to use OEM parts, such as filters, and it’s the manufacturer’s responsibility to prove a third party part caused damage before denying warranty services.

There are several quality aftermarket filter manufacturers to choose from, with proven track records. The filters the OP purchased were probably made by the lowest bidder on the contract…and it shows.

But, To Each His Own…
Because that paper is worthless in reality. We've all seen it and read about it.
You go in in and dealer says it's not covered- X caused the issue.
You pull out the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act to show them and you think I got them now, only to be told still not covered X caused the issue.
Now you say prove it.
Now does the average person have the time with a broken vehicle and the money to get a lawyer and force the dealer/manufacturer to prove X didn't cause the issue?
We all know the answer to that.

That’s why I suggested going with a quality (reputable brand that sells millions of filters annually) filter in order to avoid that possibility.… Not to mention the fact that a product (filter) seeing high usage and market acceptance isn’t likely to get an owner in such a position in the first place.

But you make a valid point…

In CA. You can litigate $10k max damage with self-representation and no lawyer allowed. You find a judge that was screwed by dealership (who hasn’t) then you have a good chance collect some $.

FYI, had lunch with my son today. He let me know that Subaru has determined there are no issues with the alternative oil filter and have advised dealers to ignore TSB 02-191-22.

There shortage this week has been air and cabin filters. 👏

I just purchased a CPO 2017 Forester XT yesterday. The dealer showed me the paperwork for the work they did to get the car up to the CPO standard which included an oil change. They used a Carquest R84712 oil filter and not one of the SOA recommended ones.

I’m surprised that they didn’t use an OEM filter and went with a low priced Carquest one. I did purchase a NAPA Gold filter this afternoon with the intent to swap out the Carquest in the next day or two so I have a higher quality filter installed.

OEM filters are in short supply. Sometimes they have to replace the filter with whatever filter they can get their hands on.

Scheduled for my first oil change (6 months and 4500 miles on my 22) at the dealer this Saturday. Hoping they still have some of the OEM filters left. I debated whether to ignore the free oil changes that came with my purchase and just do it myself with the best filter I would find online.

If I do get the alternate filter from the dealer, I might just decide to go in for the second free oil change sooner than 6 months next time just to be safe.

FWIW, I had one of those free oil changes by the dealer a couple of weeks ago. The alternate filter they installed is the very same one that Mr. Subaru guy showed in his YouTube video. I think it is a perfectly okay oil filter, and am not going to worry about parts the dealer uses while the car is still under warranty. But that's just me.

Went to dealer for 35K oil change and tire rotation. All finished, opened the hood and there is a white oil filter that says Federated Auto Parts. All prior changes done at dealer were blue Subie filters. Any reason for concern? Have read that there are issues getting filters. Thoughts? Thx in advance.
