i have a 1998 forester s and i am curious about swapping my auto for a manual trans. If anyone could tell me what transmissions fit in my car i would appreciate it. My goals are set at doing a full turbo swap eventually.
thanks!

Without being rude, I suspect the price of a manual over an auto car is a lot less than the cost of converting an auto to manual?

New EMS, remove TCU and wiring, new trans, new rear prop, new front shafts, new pedal box, new rear diff (matching FDR's), new gearshifter, new trans X-member, are my starters for ten.

If you do convert it would probably be cheapest to buy a manual Impreza that is wrecked and swap the bits over (caveat you need spacers for the trasn X-member).

This.

And to add, you need a clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, clutch slave and master cylinders, and the interior trim bits.

Oh, and your ABS won't work properly without electronic tampering.

If it is some thing you are intent on for the 5MT look at finding a donor car to transfer every thing over and you should be able to do it for <$1000.

If you are thinking 6 speed, you will be into it for about $6k, which is what it seems the average 6 speed parts list will run you on the used market.

I have found on other forums... for every 100 wanting to do it maybe 1 would follow through.

Hi Lindsey, Nice project and feasable in the old days but not nowadays unless you are a competent auto engineer. Even they would have problems getting it running right. Wise words from adc.
