Need some Help. 2009 Forester auto trans with just over 100000 miles, starts making noise on the beltway, but no lights, nothing. Get into tone, stop in a parking space and it won't back up. Drove to dealer, indicates "might be the transmission" but there is no "fix", Subaru only authorizes replacement @ $5000. Is this really fact? There are no other options? Seems like something else could be done.
Did dealer state fact or is there somewhere else I should take it?

Find a reputable auto tranny shop. You can never say for sure. But I like to do a drain and fill (4 quarts) every 10 to 20 K miles. My 120K auto tranny shifts just like it did when it was new.

Noise

The noise was a grinding like sound. Is it unusual that they won't open it up and examine the transmission, insisting that Subaru insists on total replacement? Don't know of a really reputable trans shop in the area.

Any suggestions?
