I've recently noticed a single clunk sound that happens just as I start to reverse. I jacked up the front of the car and noticed that there is a little play when I try to rotate the wheels forwards and backwards. When I was doing it I was hearing a soft clunk coming from the transmission at the limit of the play. Is that normal or am I about to have something break on me? I was initially worried it might be the diff but I have no idea how to tell if the diff is giving trouble.

Ok looks like it's my inner velocity joints and not the front diff. Car started to shudder at about 80kmh and occasional clunking sound now while driving. Booked to drop the car in by my mechanic next week.

Took the car to the mechanic yesterday. Turned out to be a loose bolt on one of the front control arms. The nut had come off and the bolt had nearly fallen out. Must have never been tightened when I had my polyurethane bushings installed. Easy fix thankfully.

I had been under the car at least 3 times trying to see if something was loose. I guess when it's up on a lift you can get a better picture of what's wrong
