[story snipped to save space... shoot me PM for details... lol)

First mod... resonator deletes! Eventually I will get a different tube to replace the piece between the scoop and the airbox, but for now, it adds a little more growl. I neatly sealed off the holes with electrical tape. Ghetto-tastic.

Before:

After:

Next, I removed the silly piece of plastic that Subaru put in front of the intake scoop to deflect air away from it.

Now, for my first appearance mod. This may not seem like a mod, but it certainly made a difference in the way the car looks. The paint's clearcoat was contaminated with all sorts of stuff, from old wax buildup to waterspots to ground in road grime, you name it. It gave the car an odd grey-ish tint.

Today I was determined to remove the aforementioned 'tint', and make her shine again.

First step was removing the bug deflector, and doing a two-bucket wash. Here's what it looked like after that:

Then, I claybarred the entire car. The clay took out most of the surface stuff that was left behind, but the paint still felt rough to the touch. So I broke out the Griot's/Porter Cable buffer and Meguiar's Swirl X for a test spot. Here's a pic of the spot:

After verifying that the method worked, I started working my way across the hood. Here you can see that the right edge of the hood is whiter than the rest. :icon_razz: I love seeing progress being made.

After that, I added a coat of Meguiars Gold Class wax for protection. I'll follow up with another coat of NXT 2.0 Tech Wax once I get some at the store later. Then I moved on to the interior... sorry, no before pics, just an after:

I <3 big gauges...

After pics of the exterior (total time invested: 12 hours):

More to come, I have some fun stuff in mind.

It's actually due for a wax job... I just haven't gotten around to it with all the mechanical issues lately. :icon_frown:
You must be using high quality wax, seeing how well the rain water is beading off!

It's been about 6 months of mud and automatic car-washes since last time I waxed it. Rather impressive, really. Meguiars NXT Tech Wax 2.0 is excellent quality, durable stuff, and it appears that it'll last a really long time with the proper prep before application (the car got a full claybar and polish treatment before it was waxed back in early July.)
I'll have to give that wax a try, it's holding up much better than the Mother's that we used. We need to claybar the '03 X this year. I noticed the surface wasn't as smooth as I remember it being when we waxed it last summer. :icon_eek:

Zach, the offer still stands to come to KY and detail my cars. Room and board will be provided.
I would so love to... but I don't have much spare time outside of school. I need to do my cross-country Forester detailing rally. Have a SF.org member signup sheet, and make a huge trip out of it. It would be awesome.

It definitely does not last as long without claybarring. I didn't clay my truck when I did it in August, and it isn't beading anymore, and I don't think the truck has seem mud, nor power carwashes. So the base paint prep makes a huge difference.
Zach, do you remember what brand UEL header you bought? I'm trying to get the 'best' eBay replica out there and I know you had to strain yours a little to get it to fit, so I wanted to know what works up front and what will require effort.

I believe I bought mine from the seller "speedyracer".

Also, I've taken it off and put it back on a few times since then for other things (including the engine swap) and straining is no longer required. Just slips on and off. I need to beat the snot out of it some more to make it clear the front swaybar better, but that's just an Outback issue and shouldn't be a problem on the Forester.
Well thank you! I'm not sure I have the means of pulling a new header apart so I'd like to solve that up front haha. Also, what about your wrap? What is it? Recommend?
Sorry I never got back to you, but it's Thermo-Tec header wrap.

Here's what I did today... block test showed leaking headgaskets.

^ I know, right?
Looking good! :icon_eek:

Will the leaking head gaskets be covered under replacement engine warranty?

They haven't written or called me back, so I decided to just do it myself. I don't know if it will be covered under warranty or not, but it needs to be done now (my parents need my old truck back and I can't afford to drive it at school anymore @11.2mpg).

There are some other MODS that have occurred in the last 24hrs... one of which is in the oven right now (literally). I'll let you guess.
Oh jeez, lets not hope it "a bun in the oven" situation. :icon_eek:
Good to see you still chugging along with this thing. Great photography btw...
I can understand how 11.2 mpg on the truck could get very expensive! It's bad enough having to fill my Forester with premium! :icon_eek:

I'm assuming you're on Spring break & short on time, so are you going to replace the head gaskets yourself or will you put the other engine back in till Summer?

Just replacing the HG's on the current engine.
I wasn't sure, but that would be my choice & I'm sure it'll be perfect when you're done!

Also a great time to rewrap your headers if they need it.

Hmmm... powder coating something?
