[story snipped to save space... shoot me PM for details... lol)

First mod... resonator deletes! Eventually I will get a different tube to replace the piece between the scoop and the airbox, but for now, it adds a little more growl. I neatly sealed off the holes with electrical tape. Ghetto-tastic.

Before:

After:

Next, I removed the silly piece of plastic that Subaru put in front of the intake scoop to deflect air away from it.

Now, for my first appearance mod. This may not seem like a mod, but it certainly made a difference in the way the car looks. The paint's clearcoat was contaminated with all sorts of stuff, from old wax buildup to waterspots to ground in road grime, you name it. It gave the car an odd grey-ish tint.

Today I was determined to remove the aforementioned 'tint', and make her shine again.

First step was removing the bug deflector, and doing a two-bucket wash. Here's what it looked like after that:

Then, I claybarred the entire car. The clay took out most of the surface stuff that was left behind, but the paint still felt rough to the touch. So I broke out the Griot's/Porter Cable buffer and Meguiar's Swirl X for a test spot. Here's a pic of the spot:

After verifying that the method worked, I started working my way across the hood. Here you can see that the right edge of the hood is whiter than the rest. :icon_razz: I love seeing progress being made.

After that, I added a coat of Meguiars Gold Class wax for protection. I'll follow up with another coat of NXT 2.0 Tech Wax once I get some at the store later. Then I moved on to the interior... sorry, no before pics, just an after:

I <3 big gauges...

After pics of the exterior (total time invested: 12 hours):

More to come, I have some fun stuff in mind.

I'd have to agree. yours looks nice without the grilles, especially if you're keeping it that clean.
How can "Mudrunner" have the cleanest cars around? I think you need to change your handle!

LOL. I thought about the irony of that yesterday as I was detailing that silver OBW.

I'd change it, but I've gotten used to it, and I think that once I get it back home to TN, it will get plenty dirty. Right now I'm up in NOVA, where there is no mud to be found. :icon_frown:

So, I just do the opposite. Instead of making the car rediculously dirty, I become obsessed with keeping it clean.

Ha! That's true. I like it without the grilles too.

Well, after attempting to wax my black Foz by hand twice and doing nothing but causing microhaze, I spent hours on some car care forums last night and I'm going to ordering a PC soon. That and an instructional DVD, swirl-x, new microfiber towels, polish, wax, etc, etc.

I'll be practicing on our gray 2000 Honda Odyssey before I try my luck on a black car. I'll start with the roof of the van, large surface that has had little protection (before we bought it) and will allow me to hone my skills without worrying about it.

In other words, I wanna be a detail maestro like mudrunner!
^^ Sounds like a good practice area. Once you get the hang of it it's pretty simple. The guys on Meguiars Online are very helpful too. That's where I learned all of my stuff.

Remember, don't let the SwirlX dry on the car... wipe it off while it's still wet. If it drys, it will be a pain to remove, but some Quick Detailer helps if some does dry on there. The PC is a good buffer, it's simple to use and has just the right amount of power for me. Griot's just came out with a new one that's pretty reasonably priced, you might have a look at that.

The good thing about detailing is, if you do screw up, you can almost always fix it. :)
Do you clean your door jams and alll that too?
Zach,

If you stop detailing your ride, the mud would have a chance to stick to it.

Yup, door jams, engine, underbody... the whole nine yards.

True, most of the mud just slides off now with the techwax.
I can has mystery box?

Suprised nobody noticed the new Rex in the background... it was my detail job for the day. My stepmom came home, and had a cow when I told her that I traded the Outback (it was parked somewhere else). +1 for mildly amusing practical jokes.

Anywho, another package arrived today, so I can share a pic or two of my new corner-carving, load hauling goodies.

They go on next Monday morning at Sheehy. I'm so excited! The ones on it now are original, with 138,000 miles of city potholes on them. I can't wait to feel the difference. :woohoo:

One thing... I need someone to reccomend me some good alignment specs. I want a setup that is reasonably fun through the twisties, but won't kill my tires. I know some of you here love auto-x and breathe this kind of stuff, so please, speak up! I don't have much time!

-1½ to 2° -front camber
-1 to 1½° -rear camber

Gr-2's are nice... I have a set on my Forester
My bank account is now dry. Hopefully the springs will help cure my saggy butt syndrome. Supposedly if you get the RalliTek RSB to go with the HD rear springs (in the pic) it makes the car handle like a dream.

Thanks for the specs, Duder... I'll add those to my instruction sheet for the mechanic.

Will, I'm jealous of your Forester. Wanna trade? :icon_razz:

Okay, so I got bored again. :shake: Raided dad's "beer money" jar (ssshhhhhhhh!) and went down to home depot....

I am a plasti-dip addict... so I figured I'd tackle the caps, too.

Whatcha think? Not bad for a $20 ghetto CAI. Seems to have a bit more low end grunt now than just having deleted the resonators. The fender well is always cool to the touch (unlike the factory intake scoop) so I figured it might get a little help from that.

Just to make you MAF intake guys jealous. :raspberry:

Looks pretty decent.
It'd be nice if they had engine covers for the NA Subaru engines though... I've always found the coil pack ugly to look at.
You had me worried at first, thought you were going to leave the pipe white. I have to admit that plasti-dip looks very good!

*cough* subtle *cough* I wonder who could make one of those? Eh, I'd be too cheap to buy one anyway.

 I'm not THAT ghetto. :bling:

Nah, I wanted to make it look as factory as possible, which is part of the reason I replaced the taped OEM intake tube. It didn't look right without the resonators underneath it.

Funny you should mention that. On my new to me '07, I pulled off the engine cover & I'm thinking, where the heck is the coil pack? Then I remembered they're near the spark plugs. I still haven't found the sparkplugs! :shake: I'm going to miss having pretty sparkplug wires. :frown:

Got my new suspension put in! Took them a whopping three days due to some rusted rear control arm bolts (which eventually had to be cut with a torch). Got new rear control arms for free since they melted the bushings in the process.

The ride is FIRM, like a stock Fozzy setup, but stiffer. It corners better than the Foz now, too. So, it's fun... and it's practical.

Playing trailer queen, loaded with about 600lbs of stuff in the back during the move to North Carolina. I said good-bye to the car yesterday, I'll get it back in October once they finish using it to help move stuff around. NO SAGGY BUTT!
