Hi,

Just wondering can somebody recommend proffesional Subaru repair service in San Francisco Bay area? East or South Bay preferably. I am interested in non-dealership services, to be able to save my $$$. Recently I brought my Forester05 to San Jose dealership for regular 15Kmiles maintenance. They charged 400$ just to tell that everything is fine. I would like to perform next maintenance (30Kmiles) at non-dealership service.

thanks,
Min

TRUST ME. God doesn't know any more about Subarus than do the guys @ LIC. I have a customer who, on my recommendation, drove down here from Carson City, NV to have work done on his Forester.

He's a very happy customer.

BTW, whatever you do, DON'T EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER go to Stevens Creek SCREWbaru. They make politicians look honest, grease monkies look competent (they give a bad name to grease monkies), and their reputation is well known in the Bay Area Subaru community. There's a 28 page thread on i-club I can link you to if you don't believe me.

GB motorsports in Fremont or is it Union City
http://www.i-club.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=112

MPJ in Hayward (use to b affiliated with GB)

Gruppe-s in Hayward
www.Gruppe-s.com

They're all competitors in the area in case u haven't known, and do a lot of suby work wrx/sti's/foresters. Call them and get quotes, they'll usually price match. My brother just did his wrx 30K service (i forget either MPJ or GB) for ~$350 OTD compared to ~$600 dealer cost.

BUT, I'm actually about to bring my FXT to http://www.licmotorsports.com/ in Novato just because of the pimpin' rep Adam and Noah have up there. I'm in Oakland, btw, and I know it's worth my drive. but my 0.5hour is different from your 1.5 hour drive.

Hi Silke,
Thank You!!
Mine's a 2015, but sooner or later I'm gonna need their help. Easy run from San Francisco with lots of good restaurants in between!

Wow, zombie thread resurrection! My recommendation for LIC still stands - IMHO they're the best Subaru specialty shop in Northern California. Let it be known that they're not cheap by any means, but the price is worth having peace of mind. Here's their review thread: http://www.subaruforester.org/vbulletin/f86/lic-motorsports-novato-great-service-thanks-adam-noah-58821/

As for the other shops mentioned in this thread - GB is no longer, MPJ is now Speed Element in San Jose, and Gruppe S moved to Santa Ana several years ago.

...as does mine...

My sincerest recommendation to any friends and family is to pass up every shop until you get to LIC Motorsports in Novato, CA.

They are one of only two shops in North America that I completely trust with my Subaru. Shortcuts? I don't call checking every single fluid, topping off every fluid (that needs it), and spending an hour diagnosing a problem (operators' mind, not actual problem) to be any shortcut.

They only fix cars three ways:

1. Completely. You DO NOT go back for the same issue twice.

2. Right - Follow their recommendations, and you too can be turning 320,000 miles like I have with Slynki.

3. The first time. Again, you don't see them a second time for the same issue. I went to another Bay Area shop for them to replace the cam position sensor in Bank 1. LIC won't name names, as they simply are too busy helping more and more people, but this one has(d?) advertised a Subaru MASTER technician...who didn't know bank 0 from bank 1.

Hobbled up to LIC, who should have been closed, and they replaced the correct sensor, on the correct side, and within an hour, we were headed home.

I may just give LIC a try. I've heard good things about TD Garage in Berkeley, and they did a quick checkup on my used-from-dealer 2103 Forester for free, confirming that all the fluids and major mechanical parts were looking good for my 2000 mi tow up to Washington state last week. But that's the only experience I've had so it isn't a recommendation, and I suspect they don't do much in the extreme mod and performance elements.

In the South Bay I'd highly recommend Mann Engineering in Santa Clara, who also happens to be one of our forum sponsors here.

Hey all - thanks so much for the mechanic recs. Does anyone know how receptive either of these shops (Mann or LIC) is to inspecting a Foz before purchase? Been looking at a couple used ones and would love a tech to go through it before I drop $$$ (compression, leakdown, other stuff). Is it normal for a seller or dealer to allow for a thorough inspection?

PPI or pre purchase inspection usually runs you a few hundred dollars, but is better than finding issues after the fact. I've had LIC do one for a prospective buyer on my old WRX wagon. He ended up buying the car because the car passed with flying colors.

Hey guys I hope someone replies to this old thread. I'm leaning towards LIC to have my Subaru worked on but I've also heard good this about garage one in Campbell. Does any have experience with both? I'm thinking my forester might need a new turbo would LIC be able to purchase the parts needed to install a sti turbo and whatever parts might be needed for that type of install? Do the also do engine work? Just thinking worse case scenario I'd like to have my motor rebuilt with upgraded parts. Would LIC or garage one be able to do those kind of stuff? Or is there a shop that would better fit my needs? I just got this forester and I'd love to keep it going for many more miles. I'm in love with it. Thanks in advance
