The same underlying vehicle architecture, first used in the 2017 Impreza and Crosstrek, then the 2019 Forester and Ascent, will soon be the foundation of the 2020 Legacy and Outback after which it will be a common architecture across virtually the entire line.

The structural design is improved over the previous generation, and materials upgraded to incorporate more high strength and ultra high strength steels, as well as improved joining methods. There are improvements in ride, handling, NVH (noise vibration and harshness), and safety. Highlights include:
  • 70-100% increase in structural rigidity - 90 percent more chassis front lateral flexural rigidity, 70 percent more chassis torsional rigidity, 70 percent more front suspension rigidity and 100 percent more rear subframe rigidity.
  • 50% reduction in body roll
  • 40% improvement in crash absorption

No doubt, the next generation platform that they come up with will be even better, but I am very impressed with how automotive engineers continue to make substantial improvements in evolving products that were first introduced in crude form more than 100 years ago.

Pics included below, and pics 2-4 are of a Forester! :smile2:
