We had a few days of snow and 25F weather. One morning I drove the Forester out into the woods and went for a three-hour walk. Started driving home and the car made the weirdest noise ever – it sounded like sleigh bells ringing. This was right before Christmas – go figure. The noise stopped after about 15 minutes of driving and never came back. Couple days later my wife tells me that her car, a 99 Legacy Outback, makes the same sound; except that it is intermittent and still there. No, I didn’t make this up.
Noise only occurs when the car is rolling and seems to originate somewhere from the wheels. I checked the wheels/brakes/etc but didn’t see anything obvious. Does anybody know what might be causing this?

No clue but have you recent left anything in the hatch area? I left keys from my trailer in the back and it sounded like little bells as well when I hit bumps and when the sub woofer was on. Then I realized I left keys in the back. Just a suggestion.

Hello TobiasInPA
(First time post.er here)
Though this post is rather old, I seem to hear the same bells coming from the back of my 2004.
I see no one else has followed the post. Did you ever find the problem? Did it go away?

I hear it when I go over bumps. And though it seems like it’s coming from the back tires, I also feel like it might be one of the tools by the spare compartment, or the spare itself. I’m going to try removing anything that might produce a sound, and see if it still sounds.

Well, I’d be interested to know if you found what it was in yours…

do you have the spare in there? if not, and if you still have the screw + plate thing there, that may be rattling.

weird sleigh bells sound

Is the sound in the back of the car and rather quiet? Very cold here for 2 weeks and we heard it too. Don't know what it is though. I'll watch your thread. g/l
