My parents have an outback which have ej25 engine too and it's spitting the code SHIFT SOLENOID C code...I can get the p## but my question is

WHERE AND WHAT IS THE SHIFT SOLENOID?

Check your transmission fluid level, if it is ok then I would take it to a shop for diagnostics. There is an electrical/functional issue with one of the shift solenoids. I don't have a lot of experience with them on Subaru's, but on Ford's it requires you to drop the trans pan and replace the solenoid.

okay thanks for the info...the subie is only running front wheel now and it's not a good position for a subaru in winter.

I notice this right before the snow hit Minnesota..I was at a 4 way and took off..thought it would jump as expected on subarus...but it skirt and was bouncing all over the road (= good air in tires)

Besides verifying the fluid level, the electrical connector on the outside of the transmission could be dirty or otherwise corroded. The solenoid is something that you can replace yourself (again, of a Ford F4EAT, you can do it).
