Does anyone here guide me on purchasing new O2 sensors for my '04 Forester XT? I'm going to be replacing them along with the catalytic converter, but looking at parts websites leaves me thoroughly confused. Does anyone have any suggestions regarding aftermarket vs OEM? I know the car needs a front and a back sensor, but I'm confused by my options, heated vs unheated, universal vs direct fit, etc. Can anyone here provide me with the parts I'm going to need?

Direct fit only, either oem or Nippondenso (which is probably the same thing). Success with the other ones has been less than stellar.

Are you sure you need the rear one? It doesn't do anything other than read what's coming out of the cat and does not affect drivability, it only keeps the CE light off.

So the rear one doesn't nescessarily have to be changed? I DO have a CE light that's related to the catalytic convertor and the O2 sensors, which is why I am changing them, so I just assumed that both O2 sensors would have to be changed to resolve the issue. Thanks for the info on the sensors as well.

I recently replaced my front one (super easy imo with the right tools) and I've had to move my rear one to 2 different down pipes now so that's easy as well. Quickest thing is do a parts search here and confirm with the vendor:

I found them to have the most knowledgeable support and hard to beat OE prices.

For how to front:

Rear one lower in the page here (on after market but same proceedure):
