I know, I know, someone's going to say 'use the search function', but I can't find it anywhere on the current site and the archives aren't up yet. I read a while back that someone had stuffed some standard wall insulation into the cargo area underneath the spare to deaden some road noise. Sounds like a good idea (and very inexpensive!) and was wondering how difficult, or effective, this would be if this were done inside the door panels. I've never had the panels off in my FXT (or any of my previous cars, for that matter). Are there instructions on how to do this somewhere? Would this even be possible or is there too much stuff moving around inside of there for this to work?

Nice to have the proper trim removal tool. I got mine from Crutchfield http://tinyurl.com/872fv at that link. Best 10 bucks I ever spent. You don't say what year, my scan is for the 05 but it should be similar.

You will have to deal with the power window/lock buttons and the door latch area. I couldn't find the scan for that in the short time I had to look. Perhaps the PDF above shows how. I didn't look at it yet.

Removing the plastic trim around the door handle (without breaking any part of it) is definitely the hardest part. Actually pulling off the door panel was simple in comparison --- just start at the bottom (use your fingernails) and yank.

I posted the procedure for my 2003 XS at www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?p=8713#post8713a while ago. My post was specifically aimed at installing directional LED arrows on the mirrors, but the panel part of the procedure is quite generic. It's pretty much based on the instructions for the speaker upgrade, but with a few amplifying comments

I noted recently that I forgot to include removing the screw near the door handle in step 4 of the procedure.

Be careful prying the little trim piece around the door handle. I didn't mess the piece itself up but did put indentations that don't seem to be rebounding in the actual door insert material around the trim ring. I was careful but it seemed to leave them anyway. Maybe some heat will bounce them back.

I always leave the door handle trim ring in place and get everything else loose first. Then when the door handle trim ring is the only thing holding the card to the door, firmly pry the card outwards and the ring will pop loose. This way, there's no chance of marring your door and less chance of breaking the trim ring. Worked every time on my WRX.

For us older grease monkeys, a brake spoon works very well to remove the trim.

This was what we used to adjust brake shoes with in the past (before self adjusters). Definately needed to replace brake shoes as it make it much easier to turn the adjusters back to get the drum off.
