Recirculation turns on A/C

I can't figure this one out. It's Iowa. It's winter. I have my heat on "hi" and I pull up next to a car with a smoker. I hit my recirculation button, and the A/C automatically comes on every time. Is this normal for a 2018 Forester? Thank you!

I believe that is intentional. It is to control moisture level in the air. While the A/C indicator light is lit the unit will not operate below a mimium air temperature.I cannot recall what that is.The climate control section of the manual was a little confusing to me.It does not help that the controls and the indicators are some distance apart.cheers Doug

That is a safety feature. The A/C comes on to dehumidify the air which prevents your windows from fogging up when recirculating the air.

On some cars this has been going on for years except there was no lights or indicators tell you the compressor was running. Sit back and worry about the price of coffee or whiskey.
